Baedeker [bey-di-ker]or [bay-di-ker]
hear it pronounced
noun

2. any of the series of guidebooks for travelers issued by the him or his successors.

Origin: "travel guide," 1863, from German printer and bookseller Karl Baedeker (1801-1859) whose popular travel guides began the custom of rating places with one to four stars. The Baedeker raids by the Luftwaffe in April and May 1942 targeted British cultural and historical sites.

Obama needs a Baedeker on how to deal with Congress. He should try the Constitution instead of Das Kapital.

The question of whether or not to close Gitmo has turned into yet another leftist-vs-American Baedeker.

I remember Baedeker from the E.M. Forster novel A Room With a View, and the movie made from it back in 1985 with Maggie Smith, Judi Dench, Helena Bonham Carter, and Daniel Day Lewis. Particularly, I remember Judi Dench as this intrepid old lady who's exploring Italy, dragging the much less intrepid Maggie Smith with her. They end up lost in Florence. Smith pulls out her Baedeker, and Dench snatches it away and pronounces, "You shall NOT use your Baedeker. We will simply drift." And goes sailing forth as the other follows fearfully behind her. It's a great movie.

I happened to see the quote in the Journal today. But, I generally follow the formula: When the final whistle blows in the second conference championship game, thus deciding the SuperBowl opponents, I turn off the television and don’t turn it back on (nor read anything about it) until the SuperBowl kickoff. This year, with the Belichicks deflating (sic) the Colts by 5 1/2 touchdowns, I was able to miss most of the second half of that game, giving me more time to Freep, Tweet, and, occasionally, read a book.

I don’t watch TV or follow sports - ever.
Just heard this guy on the morning radio talk show, and it cracked me up. Totally meme-worthy.
