It wasn’t just the pure O2.
The capsule was overpressured beyond design specs to simulate conditions.
The capsule interior was also covered in a couple hundred square feet of Velcro, which as it turns out ignites explosively when lit in an O2 environment.

I was talking ABOUT the movie! The screenwriters or producers or whomever concluded that Grissom panicked. Please note that I said I WAS NOT CRITICIZING GRISSOM!
