Woman Claims Son’s Suicide Caused By Pasadena Target Store’s ‘Walk Of Shame’

A woman is suing Target, alleging her son committed suicide after being forced to take part in a humiliating disciplinary event in front of co-workers and customers at the Pasadena store where he worked as a cashier.

...

Her son jumped to his death from the roof of the Courtyard Marriott in Monrovia on July 18, three days after he was required by Target management to take part in what the suit calls a “walk of shame.”

According to the complaint, police and store security met Graham Gentles immediately as he arrived for work, and, at the direction of two members of store management, was handcuffed and led before other store employees to an office.

...

He was questioned in the office, then later taken to the police station, according to the lawsuit. However, he was later released and never charged with any crime, according to the complaint.

...

“The walk of shame is a Target policy to purposely cause shame, embarrassment and emotional distress to any Target employee who is suspected of stealing from Target,” the suit states. “The policy consists of employees being arrested and paraded in handcuffs through the Target store in full view of co-workers and customers.”

Your [typical] vulgarity doesn’t help your argument.

I’m amazed at all the CB hate on FR.
I love the place and the employees are especially nice.

THAT might be a joke.

I have patronized them in various areas of the south and I’ve found the food ranging from okay to good. It’s high calorie redneck food. Fine dining isn’t their flair.

Guilty until proven innocent is unAmerican. Target is owned by the Democrat Dayton family. They only show compassion to homosexuals and transsexuals.

Great post, Kate! Sorry you had to marry Henry!

Yes, I never heard of kids committing suicide over classroom humiliation back in the 60s. I did see one kid (a young boy on the verge of becoming a man) paddled in front of the class for some infraction and I saw the devil enter his face where once had been an angel. Adults must be very careful with children.

Of course, this suicide victim was a man - not a child. As Mattie Ross says in “True Grit”: ‘who knows what is in the human heart?”

But you’re absolutely correct that as we get older we must fight against a hardening of heart. I see it in my own life.

“That being said, it would be a comfort to know that Target did have actual evidence of him stealing before arresting him at the store.”

That is what makes me suspicious against Target. Where is the stolen merchandise? They have to have it in court. Is why I said they should have made the arrest has soon as he walked out of the store with it.

“Personally, I can understand why a store would arrest an employee caught stealing in front of all other employees so that they can clearly see what lies in store for them if they choose to do the same. It’s a deterrent, one would hope, but I bet some of them steal steal anyway.”

Yes I know a lot about “shrinkage” in stores. However like I said they have to catch them in the act, not wait till after the fact. Now even if they had this guy on camera they still don’t have the merchandise and he’s had a chance to ditch it. Little chance of recovery and using it as evidence.

This is terrible! Even if he did steal, which the article indicates he did not, until such time he is proved guilty it should be a private matter. Target is awful if this is their policy.

Well, I don’t like the food or phony Beverly Hillbillies atmosphere and still resent the firing of that vet for giving some homeless guy a stale muffin. I prefer the less fake Bojangles for my country ham.

And I speak as a total advocate of fast food joints! But to each, his own.

Join the club, LOL!

There's another lesson learned...it helps to go to the link. I assumed he was a teenager.

"But you’re absolutely correct that as we get older we must fight against a hardening of heart. I see it in my own life."

So do I. It creeps in very quietly.

It does creep in very quietly - on little cat feet. That’s what makes it so insidious.

I thought he was a teen as well. I was surprised to find out he was a vet. There’s always so much more to these stories than what is first reported.

It may not be as cut and dry as that though.

When I was much younger I had a friend who was an employee of Winn Dixie.

He would routinely throw beer into the dumpster at the back of the store and then various friends of his would come collect it.

I also knew a girl who worked at K&B drug store as a cashier who would routinely let friends come in and shop, and then she would ring them up for a couple dollars when the actual amount of items purchased was far higher.

I knew a manager of Little Caesars Pizza who would sell late night orders without ever ringing them up and pocket the cash.

When I was much younger, I was accused of running a similar scam to that one when I worked at the drive thru of Burger King.

I said to them honestly I am not smart enough to pull of something like that, and that is the case. I just generally am not a deceiver. As it turned out though there was someone running a scam like that, and it was one of the higher managers of the store who also took boxes of supplies home, such as burger patties, fries, breakfast foods and such.

So there are some fairly complicated schemes that go on that are beyond just taking of X item out of the store without paying for it.
