He noted that liberals in the West tend to live in urban or suburban areas and often have fairly weak social and community ties, move more often and are less traditionally religious. They are more individualistic than conservatives and very unlike most people in Eastern cultures.

Conservatives, on the other hand, tend to be more connected to their communities and may live in the same areas throughout their lives, maintaining strong social and familial bonds and commitments, and are more traditionally religious. This puts them more in line with the holistic-thinking majority of the world.

"This study shows that the two sides in the 'culture war,' conservatives and liberals, really approach the world as if they came from two very different cultures," Talhelm said.

I think he means it like “self-centered,” all about me me me as an individual.

Ah, okay. If that's the way he's defining "individualist," that would make more sense.

It's just that conservatives don't flaunt their individuality, nor demand that others "celebrate" it at the risk of losing their jobs.

Very true.

Are you sure?

I see the American left, sending American jobs to other countries, and setting brand new record trade deficits with China.

Except that is (exactly) what I also see from the Right.

Everyone is selling out America.

Based on my experience with liberal friends and family members I would say this study is totally upside down. My best liberal friend even admits he is pollyanish is his world view. None of the liberals in my life care a wit about facts and do not even understand the meaning of the word analytical. They are emotion driven and live in a world of unicorns and rainbows.

The nub of it is self-righteousness.
I’m betting ALL those “emotion driven” people think they personally are “a good person” (because of their support of liberal policy).

I used to believe this myself for years. I have always been a Milton Friedman liberal. I didn't know that until I read more about his ideas.

I have talked over the years with many modern socialist what we today call liberals. Their objectives are the same as ours, their means too achieve those objectives are different.

I call them socialists or collectivist because they're NOT liberals.

Examples: Socialist want to reduce corruption. They want everyone to be more self reliant. Their means of going about doing that is half ass backward. I know for most conservatives you may question the self reliant part but look at 'sustainable development' and what they "want" to achieve.

Then there are the anarchist. Which are in my opinion the extreme leftist that figured out the difference between natural rights and privilege granted by government. Or what they call negative and positive rights.

The anarchist are very similar to us with one major difference. They're idiots that believe in no government at all.

Imagine how you supposed to stop a murderer with no working judiciary. yeah, you got it. you don't. you wait until someone shoots him (that honestly is what they believe.) Freaking stupid.

Most ‘leftists’ are socialist/collectivist. Then there are the Anarchist which are extreme individualist which has no bonds with anyone even family or relationships. Marriage they believe should be thought of as a temporary relationship. As you say, selfish in a negative way.
