Monday is Martin Luther King Jr. Day and given the context, it is an interesting moment to ask whether it really matters that the Motion Picture academy failed to nominate the black director and the black lead actor of Selma, the King biopic, for Oscars.
The Oakland Tribune went there and then some on Friday, topping its article about the awards with the headline, And the Oscar for the best Caucasian goes to ...
While the snubs may sting and point toward a broader blindness, its still more important in the long run that a young female black director received the backing of a Hollywood studio and made an important film. Long after the last blubbering actor has been played off the stage while thanking his or her makeup assistant at the Oscars, we will still have Selma.

It may be nominated for best picture, but is it any good? we know that it is an affirmative action nomination, but is it s good film, or merely a “B” grade film and it was nominate because of the subject matter?
My bet is option 2 a lousy film nominated because of the subject.
When it gets obvious that they are sleeping with HAMAS the backlash is going to hit.
Thank you. That one is a remake..of one I did a few months back
Getting everything to balance properly often takes more than the couple of minutes I have in moments of haste.... taken to make and post some images.. I think this version nailed it!
‘
Thanks again.
Movie:”White Men Can’t Jump’’. Suggested movie: “Black Men Can’t Read’’.
Tomorrow is bound to be a real bonanza .....in terms of Racess News...
To quote my favorite comedian " I dood it"! So what is hollywood gonna do, ban me from ever setting foot into a movie theater again? My response would be a resounding THANK YOU!!!!
ahahaha
Black Men Afraid to Get Married!!
etc...etc...etc...etc.
pop culture means too much to these people. It’s very child-like.
I must admit its been nearly a pair of decades since ive seen anything but The Chipmunks...movie. Alvin’s always been a favorite....
They honestly have no idea what they want. They are like an overgrown two year old having a perpetual tantrum.
I remember when Moulin Rouge came out (my daughter and I loved that movie) and it was nominated for several awards, including Best Picture and Best Actress (Nicole Kidman). Having just checked this on Wikipedia I can also note that it won both Best Costumes and Best Production Design.
BUT, Baz Luhrman did not get the Best Director nom. I remember one critic saying that was totally unfair, because no matter what you thought of the movie it was certainly the “MOST directed” movie of the year, and if it was nominated for Best Picture he too should have been nominated.
Insofar as I know Baz is a white guy.
So, you know, these people need to grow up! I don’t think it’s entirely wrong to agrue that the director should be nominated for pix nominated for best picture, but to say it’s RACIST is just totally s.t.u.p.i.d.
Maybe we need a special Oscar category for these special people.... and a gratuitous Nobel Peace Prize for every non-Caucasian.
Race trumps merit... if you’re a racist.
Actor: Selma director snubbed, not a ‘safe black woman’
Actor Gbenga Akinnagbe tells CNN’s Brian Stelter why he thinks “Selma” director Ava DuVernay did not receive an Academy Award nomination
So if one is black then they should always be given something , here we go again with the left and this race baiting and I;m sick of it.
If they are good enough they will get it.
Let then keep it up. Already most people don’t care who wins and if it goes to affirmative action, it won’t nave any meaning at all. It’s already too political!
“-—— I dont think its entirely wrong to agrue that the director should be nominated for pix nominated for best picture-—”
I don’t agree.
The Best Pic is the sum of all of it’s parts-—director,cast,setting,camerawork,music etc.
The Director directs.
.
It’s dramatized and historically inaccurate. In addition, there’s no RAP music in this show at all. No twerking or calling each “nigga”. Nobody uses the MF word. How will modern day black kids relate?
What a bunch of whining crybabies. American Sniper is going to celebrate MLK’s birthday tomorrow by going over 100 million! What more do they want? Geesh!
In their mind they have to have that promotion, that job , that award and all because they are black.
Maybe the movie just sucks and it’s full of lies to incite more blacks to hate whitey.
I find the theater experience to be atrocious, between the outrageous prices of ticket and snackbar, rude patrons and sound systems that are so loud I hear clearly if not loud in a ear that I have 80% hearing loss. The few times I go is to take my grandson and the last movies I have seen in a theater were Despicable Me 2 and Big Hero 6.
Blacks make up what, 18% of the population?
Why should I go to a movie that is pretty much dedicated to making me feel bad about what some people did to other people when I was 4 years old?
I know the history. I don’t really have an interest in learning more about it. I don’t care about what was going on in other places at that time either.
I have no shame about slavery or discrimination against blacks in America. I never held slaves. I have never actively acted in a way that discriminated against anyone.
I have few dollars to spend on going to the movies. I like to be inspired and entertained. I have a personal interest in the storyline.
They have no right to make me feel bad about what I do with my limited entertainment funds.
As my father in law used to say, piss on them.
