The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.

No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

Greetings from Missouri. We have a spring like day today. Temperature is 54 degrees and the sun is shining. Yesterday was similar. I have taken the heavy row covers off to let the winter garden get plenty of sunshine and fresh air.

Bloomsdale spinach and Little Gem lettuce are the stars, and have made it through some extra cold weather whereas all the other hardy greens have not. Little finger carrots are hanging in there and so is the garlic and of course the winter rye is doing well.

It's been a really busy week, and I haven't been on the computer, so I will be backtracking and catching up on some of last weeks comments.

Have a great weekend. God Bless.

Beautiful weather expected here in my neck of the woods too. Not too much going on - have to decide whether to work outside this weekend or work inside.

Thanks for the thread. Low 60s here in San Jose.

The fruit trees are in need of another cold snap and rain..

What to plant when buds start popping?

Eggplant. Squash. Tomatoe.

Radishes. Kohlrabi. Turnips.

I may get energetic in the garden early this year.

Or maybe not. :-)

Woo hoo!! :)

Nothing outside for me but a few intrepid cabbages and an overwintering rosemary plant that miraculously hasn’t died so far (crossing fingers, crossing toes).

So far the hydroponics are doing ok, the dill looks a bit sad and hairy but the basil is happy enough.

I noticed that my rosemary was hanging in there too. It’s only under on layer of row cover. If it survives, it will be the first one to make it through Mo. winter.

Here in the mountains of VA, trying to dig into soil would be like trying to dig into a sidewalk right now. Have always been interested in gardening, but have never really done it.

Please put me on your list, and I’ll check back in two or three months. lol

The ground here is frozen about a half inch down. I have a few plants indoors. The winter garden should give me some very early produce around the end of March.

Will add you to the list.

I didn’t make that clear. The top half inch is loose in my raised beds. Below that it is frozen - it would take a pick axe to do any digging.

I had high hopes for seed-starting and whatnot this winter, but right now all that I want to do is sleep. :)

Hi, greeneyes --

To overwinter rosemary is a cinch. HEAVY mulch. Extra water on warm days (not freezing ones, duh!). Cover entire plant with a light bedsheet when temps are below freezing, anchor with a couple of bricks or rocks. It is better generally to UNDERdo rather than even come close to OVERdoing water until March/April (in Missouri).

Best possible case (outside) is an elevated bed to prevent even accidental freezing of the roots. 4-10 inches is sufficient.

I'm going to have to look into this raising dill hydroponically. Also, there are a couple-three sage seedlings this year. Found out what killed the sage/salvia last time, will NOT repeat even the possibility of that error!

Smooches and FReegards!

Yesterday, here in Connecticut, Mr Kitty tried to stick one of my hanging planters in the ground outside the front window so I could hang a new bird feeder up for entertainment for the cats and myself. He finally gave up. Which is okay because I wanted to hang it from the awning on the porch anyway :-)

Still have some collards in garden, and some garlic, but nothing else is left. I did plan out where I was going to plant everything this coming Spring and Summer last night. This evening, I’ll go through my seeds and see what I need to order. I really want to try some of the little blue tomatoes this year. I think they look purple, but that’s just me :-) I did the some of the bumblebees and tiger tomatoes last year and they were very good. Also did a pink Berkley tie-dye that got lots of compliments from the people I shared them with. I do love to try ll those odd ball tomatoes.

It's way too cold for gardening. I sold my tiller today, it will get used.

It turns out that I'm too sick to worry about gardening anytime soon. If the VA docs figure it out, maybe next year.

Sorry to hear that. Is the VA good where you’re at? They’re pretty bad in South Alabama and came under fire in the recent VA scandal.

Not so good in DFW. Good in Austin. Turns out that I have safe and gender appropriate friend that lives in Austin. I'll be staying with her. ;)
