Heading into Seahawks-Packers playoff, (socialist) Kshama Sawant raises 13th Man battle cry

In light of record breaking ticket prices for this weekend’s NFC championship game between the Seattle Seahawks and the Green Bay Packers, Seattle City Councilmember and Socialist Alternative member Kshama Sawant is calling for the creation of the “13th Man Now” initiative.

“$500 for a ticket is an injustice to all the working Seahawks fans out there,” Sawant said at a rally on Capitol Hill Tuesday. “The dream of seeing a game in the Clink as a member of the 12th class is a false hope, attainable only by heirs of season ticket-holders.”

“Not all of us were born with a Silver Bullet Coors Light in our mouth.”

"it shall be heard around the world! We are greater than 12! We are 13!” The crowd erupted. The protest then proceeded towards CenturyLink, shouting, “No Justice, No Beast!”

Income sharing to ticket sharing.

Absolutely; as Giants fans discovered here in NJ, the NFL doesn’t want working stiffs/families at their games. They want coporate boxes and wealthy people that will buy a jersey for $100.

Sports will always be the bread & circuses for the masses, but attending live events will not be part of the program.

Is this the Indian broad wanna-be?

I live near Seattle, and actively count on her for comedy relief!

BTW, the new name for the field is KLINK.
Easier to say than Centurylink field, and since Centurylink doesn’t want to lower my rates, that’s what I’m calling it!

Another BTW, if the Packers can come and win in our house, then they truly deserve it.
But I don think so... Seattle, 27, GB 10!!

$300,000 for a Porsche Carrera GT is unfair. The masses who work for $15. minimum wage will never be able to own two.
This is an outrage!

Kshama form your own football league and team. Then you can charge whatever rate you feel is “fair”.

Till then, FO

When not making up stories about City Councilmembers, David Kroman is an editorial assistant at Crosscut.

It's a made up story - however it is Seattle so one never knows.....

I hope the Seahawks beat the crap out of the Packers. And I hate the Seahawks.

The SeaHags will Lose to the Packers. Okay 500.00 for a ticket. Beyond my price range, but I can watch it on TV in the comfort of my own home. I do not have to pay for parking, a plane flight a hotel room and I do not have to go to Seattle. it has become the rallying call that professional sports should be made affordable so the poor can attend. There is no such thing as truly poor in America. The truth is ignorance and arrogance

$500? Really? And it’s not even the Super Bowl.

But it wouldn’t surprise me. I have a few friends/associates who wouldn’t think twice about grabbing a pair of tickets and catching a first class flight across country “just for fun”. Hell, what’s 3 or 4 grand for an extended weekend? Besides, it’s been a whole week since they updated their profile pic on Facebook and a selfie from Seattle would be absolutely FAB!...

These games attract every type of personality disorder in the universe: pimps, prostitutes, gamblers, drug pushers egocentrics, psychotics, (Charley Sheen and Chris Christie types)scam artists, celebrity wannabes. Why bother?

Underlying all of this nonsense is the stark reality that sports used to be the domain of kids and tickets were affordable for everyone. Sadly, sports now exists primarily for the rich.

Football will survive solely because of gambling. The others will fall into a bit of chasm. It has already started.

Sports used to be entertainment for the masses. Now it belongs to corporations.

Never ever thought I’d take her side on anything, BUT.....

So long as these teams are playing in taxpayer-financed stadiums, she is not wrong.

this always gripes me: "working families", "working man". The only ones who are not "working" are the welfare queens and bums.
To the socialist, if you earn above the median wage, you are not "working" but elite. Of course, their low-information supporters are not bright enough to understand that.

Based on the behavior of Freepers fans of both these teams, I wish both would lose. As die hard Saints and NFC fan, this may be the first year to root for the AFC/AFL team. and yes, I have watched them all.

Interestingly, there is now the possibility that another sport could start to really take traction and become very popular in the USA: soccer.

Now, before everyone runs me off Free Republic, consider the following:

1. Soccer is cheap to play--a ball and two areas designated as goals is enough to get a game going. And you don't need a lot of expensive equipment to play, either.
2. American football fields only need a minor expansion in physical size to make them FIFA-certified to play international soccer matches.
3. You don't need physically imposing players to be good.
4. Because there are no commercial breaks during each half of action, a game is usually completed in around two hours, including half time break and added stoppage time. That makes it really spectator friendly--no being stuck at the sporting venue for over three hours like you get in baseball and American football.
5. The increasing influence of the Latino community and their fervent love of soccer is increasing the popularity of the sport in the USA.

I can see this happening in the next 25 years. The very successful exposure of Americans to the English Premier League on NBC/NBC Sports Network--especially given the start times of games in England makes them surprisingly popular for American football fans on the East Coast watching them during tailgate parties before 1 pm (Eastern time) kickoffs of NFL games--already has made more Americans appreciate the sport. Yes, I know about the sometimes questionable refereeing and diving, but both could be reduced with better-trained refs and more severe penalties for diving like immediate red card penalty (the player is sent off the field and cannot play the next game).
