Oklahoma City man Robbed by Two Men he Tried to Help

An Oklahoma City man said he was robbed and assaulted by two men after he stopped to try to help them start their car, Oklahoma City police reported. Anthony Markus McNack, 23, was arrested in connection with the incident.

Kristopher Wright said he was coming home from work on a recent Sunday morning when two men flagged him down and asked for help jump-starting their car.

Wright, 37, stopped to help, and they took advantage of his kindness by robbing him.

The men flagged him down Dec. 21 in the parking lot of River Chase apartments, in the 11200 block of N Pennsylvania Avenue in north Oklahoma City.

Wright, of Oklahoma City, said Monday he spent nearly 30 minutes with the men, talking to them and trying unsuccessfully to get the car started.

The men then asked Wright for a ride to the other side of the apartment complex, where they said they were going to meet up with a friend.

Wright agreed, and the men asked him to pull over near a white car, he said.

While the men were inside Wright’s car, one of them put a knife to his throat and threatened to kill him if he didn’t give them his wallet and money, according to a police report.

Wright said the other man threatened him with a 2.5-pound weight Wright was carrying in his car.

The men took Wright’s wallet and told him to start driving, Wright said. Eventually, the men had him pull over near the exit of the apartment complex.

One of the men got out of the car and the other man told Wright to cover his eyes. Wright said the man started hitting him with the weight when he didn’t cover his eyes fast enough.

The men tried to take Wright’s car, but they were unsuccessful in doing so because they didn’t know how to start a push-button ignition, police said.>[?

Police said Wright had knife puncture marks near his right collarbone and a cut mark on the right side of his neck. He also was bleeding from his head.

Wright said he had staples put in his head and stitches in his chest as a result of his injuries.

Police released surveillance video Monday of the incident.

Anthony Markus McNack, 23, was arrested in connection with the incident, but police were still looking for the second person Monday.

McNack has served time in state prison for 2012 and 2013 convictions on drug charges.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 235-7300.

You don’t really need to go look. They are.

The good Samaritan should have known better.

Here is the perp.

John Derbyshire rule #(10h) from The Talk: Non-black version:

Do not act the Good Samaritan to blacks in apparent distress, e.g., on the highway.

Just look at his expression. You can see how contrite he is. Not.

I've stopped to help....more than once. But, I judge and discriminate about who...I will stop for and who I won't.

I drive quite a distance to work...I drive thru some small towns...One morning it was pitch black...and I was on a road with a right hand curve...going South at 45 mph. It seemed I saw a body or something on the other side of the road...I turned around..came back to that place...and here's this big giant black lady now standing up yelling at me to stop..with her thumb out hitchhiking North...

I drove past her...then turned back around...rolled down my window still rolling and told her I was going South to Tulsa....She yelled "ME too!!"" LOL!!! I kept going......

I stop for people in trouble but usually not if they “flag me down.” If I see a guy with his hood open and his head under it I stop.

This is a decades-old scam in New York. I’m sorry to hear that it’s now in the heartland too.

Thought of John right away.

His comments in this regard are of course not necessarily accurate.

Determining if they are would require statistics about how often this happens with various ethnic groups.

Sadly, he probably is right.

When my Dad was a kid (he was born in 1922) they were hitchhiking back to town on a hot day. A car pulled over way in front of them. They hustled up there and the driver asked if they were tired of walking.

“We sure are, mister.” At which point he said “Try running for awhile” and sped off, laughing.

This is a very bad idea for all the reasons in the other replies.

I call 911, without them knowing. That way they get the help they need and no one gets hurt. If they are scammers, the help they need is a trip to the pokey.

My dad and I were down at the Salton Sea..fishing and frogging....probably 1963 or so....

We drove down this sandy dirt road...going along the New River or the Alamo...I don't remember.

Anyway..we came across this black man..with his hood up. He had fishing poles and stuff in his car...my dad stopped and helped him.

The man ended up offering to buy my dad a drink..My memory is a bit blurred about it now...but I know we went to some bar somewhere..and the man bought my dad a beer.

My pop was a good guy...!!

I was coming home from college in 1980 and had a flat on the interstate. Crawled under the old pickup and discovered my spare was flat. I stuck out my thumb with the flat beside me and watched 3,130 cars pass me by. I about gave up hope when a green 70s Nova pulled up with two black guys. Country blacks. I put the tire in their trunk and wedged myself in the back seat on broken bottles and trash. I told them I had been waiting for an hour. They said they knew what it was like. Gave me a 12 mile ride to the next exit with a gas station, waited while they fixed it, gave me a ride back, then didn’t want any money. They said they were glad to help and weren’t doing anything anyway. As they pulled off, I managed to throw a $10 in the window. They slowed down then sped up again after thinking about it. But, times have changed.
