Twice this brave young woman tried to escape and was caught, spending months of torture in the camp’s punishment block.
Undeterred, she tried again. Under cover of darkness, she somehow slipped past the SS guards and their vicious Alsatian dogs and up on to the roof of the staff canteen.
From there, she used all her circus skills to climb the electric fence, wrapping a blanket round the live wires. Then she clambered over five rows of barbed wire and a 15ft wall before fleeing into the forest

In all, 130,000 passed through its gates, of whom 50,000 were slaughtered, though so few SS documents on the camp survive no one will ever know precise numbers. In its final days, every prisoner’s file was burned, along with the bodies, and the ashes thrown in a lake.

Unfortunately, most people read the story and get the wrong message. They think “Those nazis were so terrible. I’m glad they were destroyed and that can never happen again.”
But the real message is that “Those humans are so terrible. If we aren’t vigilant, it can happen again.” When the Progressives are talking like fledgling Nazis or Bolsheviks and someone points that out, people are quick to point out that those threats to humanity are gone forever and that you are exaggerating.
But we’re not. That threat is never gone. The idea that a government can take everything from the people and then give them back what the leaders consider to be “fair” is a real danger. That same government can decide who is non-productuve, unnecessary, or perhaps just “not a good fit for the direction we are going”.
Genocide was not a nazi invention, nor were they the last people to do it. They weren’t even the ones who killed the most people. The story of Nazi death camps is not just history. It is a warning.

Barbarity is the opposite of civilization.
In 1945, the stated membership number of SS was over 840,000 members. Of these, 48,500 were members of the Allgemeine (General) SS. Much of the remainder were 18,000 officers, 52,000 NCOs, and 600,000 enlisted members of the Waffen-SS and 130,000 police.
Importantly, a strong distinction must be made between the monsters of the General SS and the Waffen SS. The General SS committed the vast majority of the truly horrific crimes in German controlled lands, including in the about 20,000 camps, the “einsatzgruppe” war crimes that slaughtered countless numbers of Slavs in captured territory, etc.
“Between 1933 and 1945, Nazi Germany established about 20,000 camps to imprison its many millions of victims. These camps were used for a range of purposes including forced-labor camps, transit camps which served as temporary way stations, and killing centers built primarily or exclusively for mass murder.”
Now examine the numbers: 48,500 for 20,000 camps, *and* einsatzgruppe. What is clearly obvious is that they did not act without substantial help. Mostly not from the Waffen-SS, but from the innumerable other Nazi police and paramilitary organizations, and ordinary citizens hired for administrative work behind the scenes.
We are entering a dangerous age of human surplus. A growing percentage of the working age population cannot compete in the economy against cheaper, faster, and better computers and robots. They are essentially human pets. And like pets their existence is at the whim of their master. If history is any guide, this isn't going to be pretty.

It was not the only blow. There were others: wars, slavery, racism, religious persecutions, torture, other failures. But it was the final blow.
A recoil from these horrors is behind the retreat into Marxism, weakness, and decadence that threatens the destruction of Western Civilization and the Western nations today.
This retreat is as misguided as the recoil is understandable.
The best hope of the world is that the people of Western Civilization will be able to overcome their suicidal disillusion and strengthen themselves in the realization that Western Civilization, though not perfect and though incapable of providing all answers, is the best, most just system of civilization ever devised and holds the greatest promise of liberty, justice, equality of opportunity, prosperity, peace, and happiness for the people of the world ever devised.
If present generations cannot sort this out, the world will face a Dark Age, but, if written records can survive it, generations in the far distant future will rediscover Western Civilization, and a renaissance will bring its finest achievements again to light, and the world will benefit from them again.

Well said. They are easily-manipulated vote machines. When the Progs have won and created a state where they can no longer lose, those vote machines will simply be useless eaters.
Yes, and let's not forget that we have today a plethora of the same types of apologists in the West defending Islam as we did back then defending Nazis. We have also a plethora of Lord Chamberlains. In there own way, they were complicit with what happened then, and now.

(The book contains plenty of parallels to today, and wishing it were otherwise does not make it so. His short but pointed comments about communist treachery and hypocrisy seem remarkably applicable to our own times.)
