The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.
No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.
Hello Tubebender . . . I recommend you start walking with the Misses . . . you’ll get your energy and zest for life back lickerty split . . . please don’t give up, I love and look forward to your posts.
I’ve had good experiences with Gurneys. There’s Henry Fields, Cooks Garden is a real find IMHO. If you are looking for a really great Rosemary strain you won’t do any better than rooting the cuttings available in many grocery store produce departments. I’ve done it twice now and both times I got the Spice Islands variety (which can only be propagated via cuttings). Best of luck.
Yikes! Too cold for sure. What did you use for alternate heat?
Most of the seeds do sprout ok for about 2 years, then some start slacking - especially corn.
I have several chive plants in the perennial garden.
Any excuse to put it off is a good excuse. LOL
Shhhh! We like it that way. We did have a little incident a year or so ago with a certain gal - called us junior achievement wanna bes. She apologized for being bratty the next day.
I’m not sure it this fits your needs, but I recently ordered the 2015 Whole Seed Catalog from Baker Creek, which specializes in heirlooms. I don’t have the resources to do much gardening right now but am planning for the future; and I love looking at the beautiful and strange vegetables that we can still get through heirloom seeds. Misato radishes, Romanesco broccoli, and the carrots that come in deep burgundy fascinate me. Baker Creek also has a regular catalog you can get for free by ordering on their website.
White Flower Farm is another favorite of mine.
Does anyone know the best place to buy amaryllis bulbs? I have a fantastic one from this Christmas, purchased already potted at a store; but I’d like next year to grow my own from the best bulbs, and learn how to carry them over year-to-year.

I want to can some pickled peppers and onions, zuke spears, and kosher dills next year, but Hubby will plant most of that stuff.
His newest garden has some sort of soil borne issue that totally destroyed his zukes last year. He pulled them and destroyed them, but I am thinking he needs to give it a serious solar treatment before he plants there, and I think he should put zukes and cukes elsewhere.
Oh please keep us posted as you go. I am interested in learning about the subject, I am sure there are some others as well.
Too many weeks till spring. LOL This is tea sipping, catalog browsing, baking bread weather.
I had a lime tree, but it had really big thorns, so I got rid of it. Couldn’t deal with the thorns indoors - kept getting stabbed.
LOL. Thanks for the picture. It made me smile. Hope your energy level gets better. Take it easy, and stay warm.
Only an idiot would buy those seed, besides you can get it cheaper at the store, what a bunch of maroons. ;)
We used those oil-filled heaters in the critical rooms. They’re pretty toasty!
Johnny’s Selected Seeds, my go-to. Kitchen Garden Seeds (Scheepers?).
Indiana Berry for small fruit.
Happy New Year!
But those veggies are tainted by Big Pharma and even Bigger Evil Medical inc
Bakers Creek Heirloom Seeds (Rare Seeds)
Absolutely my favorite - more beautiful colored pictures and they are headquartered in Marshfield Missouri - close to my home town.
My first choice for veggies is Territorial Seed in Oregon, then Johnny’s, Baker Creek...
The flavor of my homegrown veggies are better than the local store, and cheaper too. For example, we grew and harvested 150 sweet red bell peppers and the seeds cost less than 2 bucks the year we bought them.
The seeds last year cost us nothing, because we saved the seeds from our best produce in 2013. Those peppers were selling for $1.79 per pepper last summer, and cost 1.99 this week.
