Indiana man found dead after attacked by pet pit bull on Christmas Day

An Indiana man was mauled to death by his pet pit bull on Christmas Day, Portage police say.

Edward L. Cahill, 40, was discovered on the living room floor by his girlfriend when she returned from visiting relatives for the holiday. Cahill was unresponsive, NBC Chicago reports.

Authorities were called to a home in the 5500 block of Tulip Avenue at about 8:14 p.m. Cahill was found dead on the floor covered in blood and with multiple lacerations on his face and arms, the Portage police report. A county coroner pronounced Cahill dead at the scene and determined his cause of death was from a dog mauling.

According to Fox Chicago, Cahill's pet pit bull, "Fat Boy," was at fault. Police say the dog was aggressively barking, growling and lunging at officers. A stun gun and an animal control pole was used to get "Fat Boy" under control.

NBC Chicago says the couple raised their dogs since they were puppies, however "Fat Boy" has consistently been aggressive. The dog bit Cahill and his girlfriend's son in the past, the police report adds.

Actually, they score higher than any other breed

Sadly, that cannot always be said of their owners.

There have only been 2 dogs of which I was genuinely terrified.

One was the neighbor’s St Bernard, from whom Stephen King apparently got the idea for Cujo and the other was my dad’s Blue Tick.

The St was no doubt made mad by being perpetually on a chain with little or no human interaction and the Blue Tick was either just bats**t crazy or had severe Lyme disease.

My dad was so scared of “Rock” that I had to tend him.
[thanks, Dad!]
He figured my “way with animals” would make me less likely to be attacked.

He was right but one day, I fed Rock and Blue, the BT bitch who was in the same kennel, and he suddenly, for no obvious reason, started to tear her apart.

I got her out and she was torn up some but survived.

Ironically, he was always telling me that one day, my Dobes would “turn on me”.

40 years and counting.

Ain’t happened.

I was wildly relieved when he sold Rock, a local field champion, for a scandalous sum to another coon hunter.

I imagine Blue was happy, too, poor girl.

Huskies are on the top 10 potential attack list.

Kids and babies are their most frequent victims.

True story.

Huh. It’s irrelevant now: she was hit by a car earlier this year. Dumb as soup, that dog.

Pitbulls are gentle and well tempered until one day they aren’t. Then they kill someone or something. That’s not something a study can determine.

Here is the ugly truth no one has the guts to mention.

“Pit bulls” did not have this problem until a certain subset of society became enamored of them.

Dobermanns largely escaped that fate because that same subset is scared snotless of them.

They also will *not* tolerate the “training beatings” that Pits do, without ripping off the face of their “master”.

Empiric evidence:

I can go *anywhere* in my area with the Dobes and the yutes with their posse of Pits will either cross the street or pick up their dogs and run from us.

You’d think I was leading a pair of demons.

Aw.

So sorry to hear that.

I grew up with a Husky named Woofie.

My dad gave him away while we were away on vacation.

Then, a few months later, I saw him tied to a lamp post downtown and we were both overjoyed to be reunited.

My mom dragged me away, screaming and crying and Woofie was trying to break his leash to follow but she kept telling me it was not Woofie.

Years later, I found out that all of the “my dogs” who went missing while we were on vacation had been given away by dad.

Fast forward to me at 13.

He would not go near my Dobes, let alone “give them away”.

Talk about a fupped uck childhood.

And people wonder why I am the way I am.

:-\

It was unfortunate, but predictable given her determination to run out in the street. This new dog isn’t catastrophically neurotic.

You have had a hard time in life but still have so much love. I’m proud to know you.

They are much like Border Collies in that they *need* to work, almost 24/7.

I’ve known people who tried to keep them as house dogs but it was never quite as successful as say, a poodle.

Woofie was an outside dog and his constant job was amusing me.

I was only about 5 or so and never got to ask dad why he kept giving “my” dogs away.

I suppose he only told me they were mine so I’d tend to them and then he grew tired of them...or something.

And thanks for the kind words.

I’m a little teared up, here.

:]

But most dogs aren’t deadly when they do. I could fight off most dogs, but I would have no chance against a pitbull. And pitbulls do it with regularity.

The sheer popularity of the “breed” predisposes them to larger statistics, however, on any given day, a dog of another breed is also killing someone yet it goes unreported.

You are familiar with how the media manipulates our reality, are you not?

About two weeks ago, a Lab attacked a little girl riding her bike and was cheerfully ripping her face off when the girls’ pet Pit swooped in and tore the Lab apart.

Where was the national news for that?

An alternate narrative

http://www.wptv.com/news/region-c-palm-beach-county/lake-worth/5-year-old-bitten-by-labrador-recovering-says-her-pit-bull-saved-her-from-being-seriously-injured

The ironic thing is that the Lab owner is blaming the Pit for everything.

In spite of eye witnesses who watched it happen, he has a whole, tragic narrative built up, portraying the child-mauling Lab as the “victim”.

And his bizarre fantasy will likely play well with some people because, you know...it’s a ~Pit Bull~.

I have an uncle like that. He would send the wife and kids away in the ‘country’ for summer vacation. He would stay in the city and work, visiting on weekends. He would get his kids a puppy upon arrival and when he took the family home in the fall, he would let the dog go and leave. A real sweetheart my uncle.

I guess it should obvious to those who know me, what that does to a kid’s head.

Decades later, my greatest fear is still that I will come home and my dogs will be gone.

It’s true that my first Dobe came about due to a pedo uncle but I wonder if I haven’t stuck with them for over 40 years because they’re much less likely to let somebody dognap them.

{{{shudder}}}

Damn, here’s a place in the ol’ mental attic I’m sorry I visited, today.

:\

Oh, and bizarrely, the local Facebook page for “missing pets” in my state is predominately Pits.

The dogs apprently just let people steal them.

I was gobsmacked when I found out about this.
