My family never owned a slave but had the misfortune of moving to Virginia in 1857. During the Civil War, their crops and livestock were seized by the Union Army without payment. It took my great-grandfather over 10 years to recover and be able to start a family. I think we’re due reparations as well. However, my great-grandfather never complained, remained happy to be in America, and through hard work became a successful dairy farmer and businessman.
