Good buy!

Historical novels are a good genre. I like it when they mix in real people with the fictional characters.

in the Thrift Store yesterday, I picked up the definitive biography of Dietrich Bonhoeffer.

It was a huge thick book, with lots of glossy page inserts with photos.

I brought it up to the counter, and said “This man is my hero”

The proprietor said..”Take it. it is my gift to you!”

Excellent! Another benefit of shopping at used book stores.

If you like Bonhoffer, you'd like "Every Man Dies Alone" by Hans Fallada. It's about a working class couple resisting the Nazis in Berlin during the war. I liked it a lot.

The first English translation only came out in 2009, so it may not have percolated down to the used book stores yet. (I checked it out of the library.)

Nicaragua.

Not sure how it’s calculated, but does seem a bit screwy. Beer/wine/spirits enumerated are of the same ethanol content, which makes differentiation irrelevant (that’s ok). Thing is, 20 shots a week puts you at Haiti (about the middle), but 21 shots a week slams you to the top with Belarus - no middle ground.

Apparently according to what I consume; without exageration the people in Belarus are a bunch of whimps.
I drink with every meal, ( beer or wine with breakfast, beer and wine or a double shot of whiskey with lunch and at least 2 shots of whiskey while I prepare supper and wine and beer with supper).
Never did seem like a lot to me and I very rarely get lit.
Don’t binge drink, and haven’t been drunk since my twenties.

Mind you , this is all imbibed from say 10 in the morning until 11 at night and not all in one sitting lol !

Shigechiyo Izumi, a Japanese citizen who ived to be 105]), made shōchū part of his daily dietary regimen. This practice was mentioned along with his record in the Guinness Book of World Records. Because of his intimate passion for shōchū, many have speculated that shōchū is healthy and can actually promote longevity. This even prompted some local Ryūkyū shōchū brewers to market a special Longevity Liquor shōchū bearing his likeness on the front label. Despite these claims, Izumi's personal physician strongly advised against drinking shōchū, as his kidneys were not strong enough to process shōchū in his advanced age. But Izumi went on to say: "Without shōchū there would be no pleasure in life. I would rather die than give up drinking."
