With Christmas right around the corner, Lowell Police Chief Steve Bukala chose to turn routine traffic stops into personalized and heartwarming memories.

At first, one woman who gets pulled over thinks she’s about to get a ticket. Then, the officer asks:

Got all your Christmas shopping done? When the woman responds that she “hasn’t even started” and is unable to afford some of the things her kids want, the officer calls in the cavalry.

A few minutes later, the woman discovers why. And all she can manage to do is give the officer a big hug.

I would rather the police just do the jobs they’re paid to do while on duty. If they want to do volunteer work it should be on their own time.

I live in Lowell, a great small town. And they have been using body cams since 2010.

There is a federal money requirement to show 1.2 interactions per citizen in a municipality in order to collect on the cash. The goal by the feds is to force an average of 1.2 cop interactions in which your person, NCIC information is checked, your vehicle, drivers status, child support or court ordered payment status is checked, and you are reminded of who is in charge of who.

This good will crap is just that. CRAP.

I think there’s something wrong with me.

Made me smile, laugh and cry at the same time.

I’m a man. That can’t be normal...

you stop them because you are fishing

I know this is a heartwarming story but if the police stopped me without good cause or intent, I’d be livid, no matter what.

The power to detain me, for whatever reason, is placing a restriction on my rights as a free citizen. If I’ve violated the law, then restricting my rights is a penalty. If I’m not breaking the law, then detaining me is a violation of my rights as a free citizen.

Just because we need policing (community self-defense) doesn’t mean we need to live in a police state where I can be detained, just because.

I know, I know. I’m being a party-pooper to an emotional display of good will. Along with the good will of this story is the feeling I get of nails across a chalkboard.

Well, I'm joining you in the wet blanket club. Seeing those blue lights behind me would not fill me with Christmas cheer but instead thoughts of "My registration is in the glove box; will he shoot me if I go reaching in there for it now? Should I wait until he asks and then tell him where it is and ask if I should retrieve it for him?"

What's next, they show up at your house? "Can we come in? We brought presents..."

Looking at the text at the end, and listening to the first person, these were all stopped for a valid reason. They got the presents and a ticket. Sure, it is a feel good thing, but between paying for it and rewarding bad behavior, it leaves me scratching my head.

Per year. 1.2 is the start. Some municipalities just find out their rate in the third quarter and then just start sending code enforcement, social services, and the cops, in a door to door good o’l Nazi fashioned blitz.

I trust noone who pulls this kind of head fake. It's like something serial abusers would do... first jack with their victims emotionally, then lift their spirits and "love" them. It's an abuse and manipulation of power. Paving the road to hell they are.

What's next, they show up at your house? "Can we come in? We brought presents..."

Exactly. There are some people in life from whom gifts should never be accepted. They feign generosity and goodness of their hearts while compiling their lists of those who then "owe" them.

My daughters were stranded on I-96 at the Lowell exit last Saturday with a flat tire. GEICO couldn’t find a road service truck to come out and the guy called the police. They wouldn’t come out either. Don’t know if it was State Police of local Lowell.

The girls know how to change tires and were just starting when a guy pulled over and did it for them.
