A Universe of 10 Dimensions

Beyond these three visible dimensions, scientists believe that there may many more. In fact, the theoretical framework of Superstring Theory posits that the universe exists in ten different dimensions. These different aspects are what govern the universe, the fundamental forces of nature, and all the elementary particles contained within.

...

In the sixth, we would see a plane of possible worlds, where we could compare and position all the possible universes that start with the same initial conditions as this one (i.e. the Big Bang). In theory, if you could master the fifth and sixth dimension, you could travel back in time or go to different futures.

The existence of extra dimensions is explained using the Calabi-Yau manifold, in which all the intrinsic properties of elementary particles are hidden.

Explained, mind you. I now have no excuse for not understanding it.

“The Elegant Universe” by Brian Greene is an entertaining book on this subject.

I’ve never understood it either.

Cool to think about but basically useless.

I only understand things up to and including, The Fifth Dimension. It leave me one less bell to answer, one less egg to fry. But, each time the doorbell rings, I still run. ;)

The term “dimension” always conjures up ideas of parallel universes, time travel, and all manner of topics fit for late-nite AM radio, but “dimension” here simply means another degree of freedom that is “orthogonal” and independent of the previously known one(s). They allow quantum systems to store energy of motion or configuration in new places in order to satisfy conservation and symmetry laws.

I forget. Was it Feynman who decried 'string theory' as useless because it has produced to date exactly zero descriptive equations? If it wasn't Feynman with that criticism, help me out, who was it?

And, in case the obvious question isn't obvious, if a theory cannot describe the real world, what the hell good is it?

Great comment, Diana! Would you like to ride in that beautiful balloon? You’re too subtle for this old empiricist.

Which one of the ten dimensions is this one:

You are about to enter another dimension, a dimension not only of sight and sound but of mind. A journey into a wondrous land of imagination. Next stop, the Twilight Zone!

Who are they trying to kid. There are seven dimensions to an octave and then it repeats itself.

The Big Bang Theory
Leonard: At least I didn’t have to invent 26 dimensions just to make the math come out.
Sheldon: I didn’t invent them, they are there!
Leonard: In what universe?
Sheldon: In all of them, that’s the point.

Piaget did studies with children to determine at what age they went from two dimensional perception to three dimensional perception. It is a gradual shift where you have both perceptions after the shift takes place.

The same thing is true when you go three dimensional to fourth dimensional. You still can perceive the old way, but a new reality begins to form.

...the theoretical framework of Superstring Theory posits that the universe exists in ten different dimensions.

It turns out that ten dimensions were hypothesized long before string theory adopted the idea. The hypothesis held that all but the three we have now collapsed within a nanosecond of the Big bang. I first heard this in high school in the sixties.

And in three dimensions, your tax money is exponentially being pissed away on this crap.

How do you test a hypothesis in the tenth dimension, by the way?

I can jerk off in about 5 minutes and RELATIVELY accomplish as much as these clowns.
