Watch Formation-Flying Chinese ‘Yaogan’ Satellites Slip Silently Through the Stars
universetoday.com ^ | on December 4, 2014 | Nancy Atkinson

According to Robert Christy at zarya.info, the Yaogan satellites are imaging satellites “with a government or military purpose. Some seem to carry optical payloads and others carry radar. There are also some launches into orbits very like the US NOSS satellites.”

...

There have been 24 launches of these satellites since 2006, with one launching as recently as November 20, 2014. Four of the launches were for “triplets” of these satellites.

Targeting assets tied to DF-21’s?

Good eye Fred, Brilliant observation. Wish we had ass-hats in the government doing analysis like this but that’s a pipe dream.

Their coming for us. These idiots in the government don’t have a clue what’s going to happen. The recent Chinese third hypersonic test demonstrates it.

I’ll take it a step further Fred, maybe it’s targeting for a hypersonic missile delivery system. Coincidence, I think not.

Being of an age that allows me to recall the days of WWII, this seems to be a case of “deja vu” all over again...

How they going to get over here to get us?

You’re right. And I’m sure they learned about telemetry from this bunch that enables this.

DF-21 is a medium range ballistic missile with terminal radar guidance. This is an antiship missile.

It could very well be. I don’t see the formation flying as an asset to optical payloads. I see it of more use as a dispersed array of elements forming a subset of a much larger aperture, if you can phase lock the sources in each together. (To me, the triangular lattice is reminiscent of the packing of a trio of elements in a phased array.) Because of the separation, I’d think the frequency was on the low order of the scale, maybe S or L band...

I don’t have a clue what you just said but...it was absolutely beautiful.

What if these satellites actually carried kinetic energy weapons? Any ICBM launched has an “up” part of its trajectory and a “down” part. Imagine if the “up” part were already taken care of and the weapons were just lingering constantly passing over targets. Kinetic weapons traveling at nearly 8000 mph would be to their target in a minute or less and there is no launch to be detected and a reaction would be impossible. If you can eliminate half of a launch cycle (the “up” part) and delay the “down” part to a time chosen later, your strike time is cut in half at least. If these satellites could serve as guidance systems for a terrestrially launched missile why could they not guide a kinetic weapon aboard the same satellite?

They could probably be knocked out pretty easily. If we ever have a war with China and Russia, everyone’s satellites are gone.
I just don’t think it will ever happen. No money in it.

If you're talking about the kinetic weapon itself being knocked out I don't believe that would be as easy as you think. Their launch (dropping them really) would be undetectable and they'd be here so quickly there wouldn't be time to respond. If you mean the satellite carrying them would be easily knocked out then I don't believe that would be the case either since a ground based missile headed up could be destroyed by a space based weapon headed down at a MUCH greater speed. I'm not certain but these satellites may be beyond the range of any suborbital missile. Think of satellite borne kinetic weapons as "pre-launched" missiles already half way to their target.
