John Cleese says you can't make jokes about Muslims - because 'they'll kill you'

John Cleese has argued that political correctness is 'condescending' as it only allows jokes to be made about certain groups while implying others need to be protected.

Speaking to Bill Maher on HBO, the legendary comedian said he used to make race jokes about nationalities such as the French and Australians - but if he mentioned Mexicans it was deemed unacceptable.

Make jokes about Swedes and Germans and French and English and Canadians and Americans, why can't we make jokes about Mexicans? Is it because they are so feeble that they can't look after themselves?

The British comedian then goes on to say suggest that the reason you can't make jokes about Muslims is because 'they'll kill you'.

'Who are the people you can't make jokes about?' he asks Maher who instantly responds: 'Muslims

'Try that,' he adds. 'See what your Twitter feed says.'

A laughing Cleese responds: 'That's not saying that you can't, it just means that they'll kill you. Theoretically you could.'

The comedian added: 'The problem is if you make jokes about people who are going to kill you, there is a sort of tendency to hold back a little isn't there?' Clease, 75, described writing his memoir 'So, Anyway' as 'the most fun I have had in 10 years' +4

Speaking on Real Time with Bill Maher, Cleese went on to say that he finds any type of fundamentalism 'terribly funny'.

He said: 'Because the thing about fundamentalism is that it's taking whatever the book is - the book Qur'an or the bible - absolutely literally.

'I've met some pretty smart people in life and you know not a single one of them was literal-minded.'

You couldn’t be more wrong.

There is negligible difference between the many ancient copies which are extant and the Bible we have today.

The Book is amazingly, miraculously, intact.

Are you kidding? The discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls proved virtually nothing has changed.

Scribes took making copies of the Bible very serious. If they made one mistake while making a copy, they would throw the entire thing away and start over again.

Pfiffle. The Bible is probably one of the most stable document over extremely long periods of time there ever was. And translations into English and other languages is not the same thing as “rewritten,” a very misleading way to put it. Translation is serious work, and there are challenges, but no essential teachings of Christianity are in doubt over the occasional translational puzzle. God told the prophets Messiah would come, and he did, and anyone who believes in him will find eternal life. No matter how many times we copy it, no matter how many thousands of languages we translate it into, the Gospel of Jesus always comes out the same. A wise person might take that as a hint that God means for us to know it, and believe it. Just sayin ...

Peace,

SR

The only funny muslim is a dead one.
The only funny jokes about muslims are about dead muslims.

The Bible was not written in modern English, so it could be he was referring to the various languages (Hebrew, Aramaic, Greek, Old English, etc) the “scribes” used in various copies to get to the modern English version.

One has to trust the the “scribes” were divinely inspired to choose the correct word when translating from one language to another to get to the modern version. The Torah verses in the same Books are very different when read in Hebrew from King James.

The most well known of these errors is the admonition in English: Do not kill, which is actually in Hebrew: Do not murder. Very different propositions.

People prefer to believe that the Bible is a book full of fables because they KNOW that if it is true - they are going to spend an eternity in hell. Pretending that something isn’t what it truly is will not change the facts . . . but they will have billions upon billions of years to consider their error.

They tend to diregard it as a whole by concentrating on portions that are problematic from a “logic” standpoint.

C: PININ' for the FJORDS?!?!?!? What kind of talk is that?, look, why did he fall flat on his back the moment I got 'im home?

O: The Norwegian Blue prefers kippin' on it's back! Remarkable bird, id'nit, squire? Lovely plumage!

C: Look, I took the liberty of examining that parrot when I got it home, and I discovered the only reason that it had been sitting on its perch in the first place was that it had been NAILED there.

(pause)

What’s the definition of a “moderate” musslim?

The one whose weapon has run out of ammo.

Exactly right. A moderate Muslim is one who doesn’t feel up to the job of cutting off the heads himself.

#16 I am kinda bummed they left out the book of David. After looking it up I found the book they left out.....

David was not the sole author of any books of the Bible, but: He authored most (but not all) of the Psalms, a Jewish Humorbook that is the Largest book of the Bible.
