Most Disney DVD’s include a calibration routine in their setup.

I review TV’s and video and do this with every TV I try. The good ones now, however, are excellent out of the box. Just set it for home use (as opposed to store demo) and in the menus set it to “professional,” THX, “cinema” or whatever comparable setting they offer. Some offer ISF setting, which is the setting the test disc would be going for anyway.

More important, turn off all the nannies, like noise reduction. Edge enhancement, 120/240 or whatever Hz. The pic might look a tad flat at first but it’s the way to go - getting the original signal from source to destination as unchanged as possible.

Cheers,
Jim

If you do a search for your television and calibration, you can usually find recommendations for tweaking the settings to get the best results. I did that with the Panasonic Viera that we have and there was a noticeable difference.

From what I have read recently, it is the new 4K TVs that require extensive calibrations.

Some comments from various other websites say that purchasers of the 4k TVs should consider hiring a professional to set the calibrations. Some AV websites list some recommended calibrations, depending on the brand and screen size.

The lower level LCD/LED TVs have fewer control settings.

My high-end Samsung plasma greatly benefited from adjusting the default settings for brightness, contrast and color (but I found it best to stay away from any other more esoteric settings).

The biggest win, however, was first disabling “ecomode” which for some unfathomable reason is Samsung’s default, and which makes the picture look like mud.

At any rate, I didn’t need no stinkin “calibration” DVD to do this. I just sat down with an artist friend and we futzed with those 3 controls (after ecomode was first disabled) until we agreed we had the best and most realistic picture possible.

How is a universal calibration possible?
Not only are different TV makers, brands and models well, differently set up, the automatic set parameters incomprehensible and manual calibrations chaotic, but the program suppliers, cable and satellite services particularly, what with compression and unpredictable color levels impossible to understand.

And finally there's "personal preferences..."

Bought a Pioneer Elite plasma 5 years ago. Good out of the box had it professionally calibrated and it made it outstanding. Still one of the best pix in the business, the one all others are compared to. I recommend it to anyone who pays big bucks for a big screen HDTV it’s worth every penny.
