What the football gods giveth the football gods taketh. Auburn beat 'Bama on a TD off a missed FG then Saturday TAMU scored a TD on a blocked FG. Auburn escaped Oxford on two late 4th quarter Ole Miss fumbles then on Saturday Auburn lost due to two late 4th quarter fumbles. Looks like we won't have Notre Dame to kick around anymore as Golson kept giving the ball away. Once again the SEC West provides the game of the week and another potential elimination game as Miss State travels to Tuscaloosa. THE Ohio State travels to Minnesota where the temperature will be a balmy 28 degrees. An interesting game in terms of the Las Vegas line is FSU visiting the Canes. LV has the Seminoles as only 2 point favorites.

Pardon my ignorance... But the top four play off? Or is it 8?

Another year and Alabama is clearly over ranked. But we’ll find out this weekend just how much over ranked they are :-)

Many observers, including those who should know better, have questioned the weekly release of these rankings especially in October ie somewhat early in the season.

In reality it’s a clever ploy by the committee. They have watched the NCAA basketball selection shows in which one set of rankings (or bids) is issued one time only and the poor chairman is crucified on live TV even after giving out a generous haul of 68 spots.

This committee has only 4 bids to issue and by giving the teams and themselves a weekly sneak preview they are desensitizing all concerned. By the time the final ie the only meaningful rankings are issued the outrage engine will be largely out of gas. The #5 team will receive a bit of sympathy but little more and the committee, a political body, will have escaped a politician’s worst nightmare: being made to answer personally for a group decision.

Methinks Nebraska should be moved further up the food chain.

Big game this weekend in Tuscaloosa between a couple of dark red areas. Roll Tide!

1. The rankings don’t really matter right now

2. Their #5 ranking may as well be #25....currently they’re on the outside looking in

3. ‘Bama is square in the middle of the pack, with the 1 loss teams. Three ranked higher, three below.

Luckily there’s a game to play Saturday. Who knows...if ‘Bama beats the #1 team in the nation, they may go up a few slots :)

Correct, but the Big10 ever since they crapped on ESPN with their own network they’ve been down and out. Meanwhile the SEC hype machine started it’s own network with the SEC. Nope no inbred nepotism there.

Sort of funny the Big 10 = 14 was so eager to bring in joke programs like Maryland and Rutgers when nobody cares about those programs or college football in the NE Corridor. I grew up in NY Metro and if you were even a college football fan you support Notre Dame.

True. Alabama can clearly make their case this weekend. While everyone complains...Oh the SEC is so tough...that same hype gives them opportunities no one else has.

For example, there’s no one for Ohio State to play to make their strong case other than last week’s game.

While that map only tallies people that ‘like’ college football on facebook, it is 100% true in my experience. Like you said, the NE is NFL territory all the way unless you played football for one of the colleges there. I lived near DC for a bit, and Saturdays were for yardwork (or lacrosse, blech), while Sunday was gameday.

Having grown up in Alabama and only having the Falcons and Saints as nearby NFL teams, it was always Roll Tide or War Eagle in the fall.

I would agree. Oft times the teams are mismatched. And what the heck is Nebraska doing playing Rutgers?

For decades I looked forward to watching Nebraska vs. Okla on day after TG. All changed now. And for the worse, IMO.

The state of Alabama has a population less than metro Houston, Texas but has two (consistently) nationally ranked teams, Alabama & Auburn.

The rivalry in the Iron Bowl (Alabama - Auburn) between these two teams is greater than that between Texas & A&M.
