With 7 out of the last 8 championships under their belt, the SEC should get a little...ahem...hype.
Shouldn’t they?
Seems its been a consistently good conference for a while now.
Heck, during last week’s game, the coaches collectively had 5 national championships in their trophy cases.
Look, I tell fans of teams that have weak schedules: Win. That’s all you have to do. If your schedule is that lousy, all you can do is win. If Ohio State were undefeated, they would be #2 in the nation right now.
And I readily acknowledge - if you don’t win, you don’t control your own destiny. There will be too many one loss teams...a committee will decide your fate. I’m talking about Alabama here. Now all they can do is win out (something they control) and rely on luck (Auburn losing). Its a bad spot to be in.
There will now be 4 teams with a shot. The odds of 5 teams going undefeated are astronomically small. So its simple - if Ohio State is a champion, just win. (Don’t lose to a team that now has a sub 0.500 record like they did earlier this year).
But... and there is always a big but isn't there?
How the heck can TCU (and God Bless the Horned Frogs, nothing against them!) be ranked above Baylor when Baylor beat them? Head-to-head has to over-rank strength-of-schedule etc.
My son went to the University of Texas for his first year (what a waste), got his masters from the University of Houston and his PhD/physics from ASU (Arizona State University).
He is completely clear of the Alabama football scene, lol.
Four teams will get in. Two more are going to be pi**ed - hard to see how Ohio State can climb into the top four. In four years it will expand to eight teams (and Nos 9 and 10 that year will be pi**ed!).
If Bama beats Mississippi State and Auburn, I don’t see how they’re not in the Top Four.
Auburn is virtually out with two losses. Even if they beat Bama I don’t see any combination of wins - losses above them that gets them in with two losses.
FSU has Miami, BC, and Florida and the ACC championship game (assuming). Stranger things have happened, they have been playing a lot of games right down-to-the-wire, but we’ll see.
ASU can win out which would mean, I believe, beating OU in the Pac 12 Championship Game. How could they be left out if that’s the case?
Regardless, interesting four weeks of NCAAF still left before bowl season....
I've been wondering the same thing. While, it is true... two VERY POOR referee calls at the end of their game GIFTED Baylor the win... a win is a win. It must count for something.
Maybe, it's just because Baylor hasn't yet beaten KSU. Their schedule strength are nearly identical. H2H results HAS to be the tie-breaker.
Aren't they both in the Big Ten now??? It's hard to keep track (like WVU in the Big 12!?).
Then you have to go outside the conference (MSU played Oregon for example). The thing against OSU is that loss against Va Tech, a team which has since fallen apart.
Bama has direct input into Auburn losing.
“For example, theres no one for Ohio State to play to make their strong case other than last weeks game”
Maybe, maybe not. They play #25 Minn. this week, and if Neb wins out, they should be a fairly high ranked team come Big 10 Championship. But they are still on the outside looking in.
I said years ago they should have an 8 team playoff. Use the new. Yeas day (BCS) bowls as round one. The next week they add round two (NCAA) makes more money on those games. And the championship the following week.
Eight teams and no one can really complain. But with four there will be too many times when a team with a better record will not make it and probably should.
New Year’s Day. Damn iPad
What that map tells me people like football win their teams are winning.
“Bama has direct input into Auburn losing.”....
Again.
But A&M already kicked them out of contention.
Pretty clear from that map that Alabamans’ perception of their personal relevance comes entirely from the fortunes of their favorite college football team, even though the majority of the fans have never darkened a college classroom doorway. Pretty sad, really. But the state’s insular and provincial nature comes from its historical existence outside of the streams of commerce and exposure to the wider world like other states have had (such as Georgia)— which is somewhat of a good thing in the post-modern and increasing atheistic western society.

lol...SEC is the toughest.
Much grumbling about Oregon at 2 with one loss versus FSU at 3 with no losses. Reason is that Oregon has beat three top 25 teams. They had their hands full this last weekend with Utah. Had to use a Utah receiver’s (Clay) major error to score a 178 yard touchdown to do it. I expect as the years go on we’ll see a change in how Tier 1 teams agree to play non-conference lesser rated teams.
That’s why it’s so surprising he’s a gay partisan. Truly a demographic outlier.
Under BCS, there was endless whining from the #3 ranked team.
Now there will be endless whining from the #5 ranked team.
What's the point? I'd be happy to go back to the old poll system.
The colleges won’t whine too much, because everybody gets serious bucks from the playoff deal:
