Turning back time or, Is it getting hot?
My pea brain | 11/09/2014 | outofsalt

Having been buoyed by the election results this year, I did not suffer my usual depression of adjusting the clocks back to daylight standard time as deeply as usual. It seems some folks are very sensitive to this biannual experiment with time. Some suffer in the spring as we, “spring forward” and others, like me, have a hard time adjusting to the early darkness of, “falling back”.

Somehow our government feels we benefit from adjusting the clocks to obscure our perception of time. They do this in other ways; inflation data, unemployment data, census data, health data and, many other policy forming information are, “massaged” or adjusted to generate metadata in order to help us cope with the myriad of societal problems we face. By, “calibrating” information we can improve the, “message” and impose policies to resolve issues. Daylight savings was adopted to help us save energy, or so the argument goes.

As a service to my country, and in an attempt to help us all feel better and get along, I would like to help resolve the climate science debate by proposing a new way to handle the problem. We should stop adjusting the data from the many weather stations used to measure climate change and simply introduce thermometers calibrated for winter and summer. On the spring and autumn equinoxes we simply exchange thermometers.

The summer thermometers will measure 100 degrees Fahrenheit as 85 degrees, “summer cooling therms” and in the winter, 32 degrees will be reported as 45 “winter warming therms”. By adjusting the terms we improve the therms! We will end all the acrimony of unsettled science. We will all save energy and reduce pollution by feeling better about the milder temperatures and most importantly we will come together as a nation united by our common delusion! What do you say America?

Excellent!!

I hate daylight savings time..and its unecessarily necessary adjustments!

May i suggest all like minded FREEPERS in those states that Observe DST....and allow for ballot initiatives...help ELIMINATE this travesty at the next election.

My brilliance seems lost on you. Rather than fight daylight savings you might consider nominating me for a nobel, or at least an ig-nobel.

When told the reason for daylight savings time the Old Indian said, “Only the government would believe that you could cut a foot off the top of a blanket, sew it to the bottom, and have a longer blanket.”

It’s like cutting two feet off the top of your blanket and sewing in onto the bottom of your blanket so you have a longer blanket.

Try working rotating shifts.

Week 1 - four 8hr days Monday-Thursday
Week 2 - Three 12hr nights starting Friday night
Week 3 - 12hr night Monday night, and three 12hr days Friday-Sunday
Week 4 - Three 12hr nights Tuesday-Thursday
Week 5 - Four 12hr days Monday-Thursday

Repeat for 30 years.

***and in the winter, 32 degrees will be reported as 45 “winter warming therms”.***

Reminds me of the story of the farmer who planted a field of popcorn.

That summer it got so hot the popcorn started popping in the fields. Two mules in a nearby field thought it was snowing so they immediately froze to death.

I think you miss the point. The dim’s need global warming to scare monger the public. Thus they need DST. The extra hour of daylight causes the earth to warm.

The implementation of Daylight Saving Time has been fraught with controversy since Benjamin Franklin conceived of the idea

Germany was the first country to implement DST. Clocks there were first turned forward at 11:00 p.m. (23:00) on April 30, 1916,

I knew the Socialist Democrats were at the root of the problem...most problems, really. Though maybe in 1916 they were still called progressives?

Try working rotating shifts.
I lasted about 3 years at Kaiser Aluminum (mid 70's) with a similar schedule, which they called a 21 day turn.
Week 1: Swing shift, 7 days straight then 2 days off.
Week 2: Day shift, 7 days straight then 2 days off.
Week 3: Graveyard shift for 7 days then 5 days off.
Repeat for 5 years then you got 10 weeks paid time off to clear all the toxins from your body. It was brutally hard work that paid pretty well.
