How some exposure to Ebola could lead to immunity

Epidemics like the current Ebola outbreak in West Africa often get started when people make contact with animals carrying infectious diseases, but, paradoxically, a certain amount of human exposure to a virus at its source can actually also prevent the extensive spread of a disease, new research suggests.

Finding a "sweet spot" where there is enough human contact for some people to build immunity to a virus, but in a way that does not cause a disease to spread widely, could be a key to preventing deadly diseases from becoming epidemics, researchers say.

"If we're really worried about emerging infectious diseases, we really need to pay attention to the ecological interfaces between animal reservoirs and the human populations that interact with them," said Timothy Reluga, a mathematical epidemiologist at The Pennsylvania State University.

Infectious diseases such as Ebola hide out within animal populations. Scientists call these populations "reservoirs," and contact between humans and these animals is what allows these diseases to hop across species. Some human communities serve as bridges between the animal hosts and the wider human population.

Within these bridge communities, humans are often exposed to animals that carry viruses, including dogs, pigs, bats and birds. When a virus does move form an animal to a human, "Usually what happens is nothing the virus dies because it is not suited to our bodies," Reluga told Live Science.

So that we don’t suffer the horrible fate of losing Fearless Reader, he should expose himself a little bit by kissing someone with Ebola.

That must be a fake picture. The sign in the background advertises “Photo I.D.”. All the smart people in U.S. politics and the U.S. media tell us that photo I.D. is impossible to get.

You can build your immunity by taking buses where they can give it to you, but you can’t catch it.

Let's see. If I drink the venom of a black mamba, how much will be too much?

Any takers?

It is true that not every person who gets Ebola dies because of it. Mortality is estimated to be somewhere between 50% and 70%. So it does make some sense that if you get it and manage to survive, your body has probably built up significant immunity to that strain.

Of course, like the flu, the Ebola virus is mutating, and each new strain is a little different. Surviving one particular strain probably doesn't guarantee a person anything against a different one.

Guess we just need to “spread it around” a little so the “system” can solve tj e proble. Redistribution of disease.

I almost wrote something about chickenpox.
Yes, it’s an example of deliberate exposure to a disease with full knowledge that you’ll most likely & actually contract it. This was done with chickenpox because the disease is mostly harmless in children and increasingly harmful as adults age (I had it as a teenager, an awful 3 days I couldn’t imagine being worse and still surviving).

One does not expose people (self or others) to Ebola on the 30% chance they’ll develop an immunity instead of (the other 70%) spewing their liquified organs out every orifice.

What you neglect to discuss is the permanent long term damage to the liver, kidneys, intestines, reproductive organs, vision, and other stuff.

The long term prognosis for ebola survivors is one of eventual wasting away due to the damage to the digestive system and renal issues. Three to five years out they will be dead or needing kidney transplants, heart and lung transplants, liver transplants, and suffering from the inability to absorb nutrients thru their stomach and intestines.

I thought Obamacare was centered on wellness visits and prevention???????? / Lying A$$ bastard half breed son of evil./ns

Also remember that even if someone survives ebola, they are left with a lifetime of struggling with immune issues, systemic arthritis, and vision/eye problems.

Pandemic Prevention 101 instructs us that when a virus with high mortality is overseas, it is best NOT to jet back and forth all willy-nilly. This virus can kill perfectly healthy people in their 20's. Can you imagine how it would run roughshod over the young, the old, and those already struggling with health problems?

President Obama is an America-hating sociopath with a cool veneer and a bright smile. The sooner people realize the maniac in our midst, the better we shall be.

I certainly didn’t mean to imply the disease was any picnic. And I agree the current policies we have in place (or don’t have in place) right now are crazy.

Miracle Max medicine. Not sure I want to be “a little bit infected” with ebola.

A simple “vaccine” has been tried. I’d like to hear the actual stats of who was given the blood of the patients who survived. I know the sample is small, but I’d be interested to know whether they have any meager stats about the effectiveness of giving antibody blood.

sounds logical, as it was reported, some previously infected patients in Liberia who fell ill to Ebola but survived and recovered returned to help out at clinics because, it is believed, they now harbor immunities that prevent reinfection
