INDIANAPOLIS - An outbreak of a virus at Indianapolis Animal Care and Control has been a death sentence for dozens of cats at the city's shelter, and critics say it didn't have to get to this point.
The virus has a big name: panleukopenia. Shelter employees say it's highly contagious - similar to the parvovirus in dogs - and almost always deadly. That's why the city shelter is closing its doors to any more cats for the next two weeks.
"Everybody who's been exposed is a potential risk, and the only way we're going to get it controlled is if we euthanize those cats, decontaminate the rooms and move forward," said Dawn Contos, the shelter's community outreach coordinator.
Employees have already put down 20 cats that tested positive for the virus, but around 80 more are scheduled to follow, according to Contos. For the next two weeks, they're asking the public not drop off any more cats until they can get rid of the problem.
"If they're bringing us cats, we're not going to have any choice but to euthanize them," she said.

Thanks for the clarification.

Poor kitties . . .
I keep my girl kitty indoors most of the time, so she’s safe.
Kitty virus ping...
Soo,
Was this plague brought by illegal bed wetters too?

I’m with you.
Feral cats are a HUGE problem.
It was only a matter of time before something went through that population.
Here’s something cat owners can do.
KEEP YOUR CATS INDOORS AT NIGHT.
Then I won’t have them digging in my garden, leaving carcasses of animals and birds they’ve killed in my yard, spraying my doors and tires, yowling at night in cat fights or whatever, and walking all over my car.
All animals go to Heaven.
My pet cat died of that when I was 12 years old. I’ve never seen such pain and misery since (and I thank God). If your cat gets it, euthanize immediately...you will never regret it, and if you don’t, you’ll regret it for a lifetime. I’m 72.
Amen.
Most of my cats are outdoors....most of the cats I feed are homeless...
yeah, you might...
God loves His animals, so...yeah I’d be a little worried about getting flamed, but not by Freepers.
Thanks for the ping!
If you LOVE cats like I do, you wont want to see them suffer.
We adopted a stray 10 years ago, I named him MISO. He was around, you know the story, you start to feed. He was a loving boy who really loved us. Took him to get him fixed, tests showed he had kitty HIV and highly contagious.
I had to bring the other 8 in to be sure they were not infected, what an ordeal, they were fine.
Miso had to be put down. Stray animals with this disease suffer greatly when left alone. I will never forget him.
