A wealthy Michigan suburb who built FENCES across the streets to keep out Detroit 'have-nots'

On one side, there are dilapidated houses, gardens overflowing with weeds and a high crime rate.

On the other, there are streets filled with spacious homes, well-manicured lawns and yoga studios.

This is one of numerous fences that have been erected by the wealthy 'haves' of the Michigan suburb of Grosse Pointe Park to 'prevent 'have-nots' from Detroit from driving into the city'.

The brick barrier, reading 'Road Ends', represents a significant divide between the two cities, which despite their proximity, differ greatly in terms of average salary, crime rates and general desirability.

My neighbor is a huge bam bam fan as well. He asked me today when I thought the economy would improve. He didn’t like my answer.

He’s spent more time laid off then working the past 3-4 years. He deserves it.

This whole article is full shit and lies......I don't know where to begin!

The first photo showing a brick barrier is down around the Cadieux and Jefferson area and has been there for years! There is only one street leading into that small complex.

As for the Van Elslander mansion, they're at the end of my sister's street and is on the lake side of Lake Shore Drive. While they certainly have a fence separating the grounds from Lake Shore Drive (as do many of the estates along that route), it ain't a secured gated community and anyone can turn into their driveway and cruise up to the house if they want.

As for the comment about Kercheval, where the hell did that come from? There ain't no barriers on Kercheval, never has been and never will be...........

And the slam on the parks? Give me a F'n break! They're owned and maintained by the respective communities and paid for by the taxes and membership dues of the residents. Why shouldn't they be restricted to residents only?

Great idea! We need more fences like that. Even better is if they’re manned with armed guards 24x7.

>>> The tension is such that at the five Grosse Pointe municipalities, dubbed ‘the Pointes’, residents must show an ID to enter public parks.

Inaccurate reporting. They aren’t public parks... they are community parks, funded by community taxpayers. They are open to residents of the community and their invited guests. And unlike presidential voting, residents must present ID. I took a recent stroll around Grosse Point Farms “park” the other month, and took a dip in their pool. Very nice.

Took a Street View drive around the city limits. Only saw one such barrier, though I might have missed a couple.

I don't think that can be reasonably described as "numerous."

Also noticed that most of the houses in the city are quite modest, nothing at all like what they chose to put up as representative .

There are lots of places in my city where streets don't go through. Has nothing to do with haves and have-nots.

I’m no fan of city living but If I were I would have no problem living in Mexicantown. Briggs is another neighborhood on its way up.

Responses like are typical in this thread are a perfect example of why conservatism will never win. Long on consensus and short on facts. Rather than claiming credit for the good that has come about as a result of GOP control of the state, we get monkeys with clubs bashing because they aren’t bright enough to do anything else.

Check out Mexicantown with street view. You’ll see some empty or abandoned buildings but not many and they don’t stay long. Lots of new porches, windows doors and siding. People there take some pride in their neighborhood.

Might they also be trying to keep actual, non-metaphorical, roving stray dogs out?

I was a victim of a similar scheme back in the early 70’s. The city school district made the decision to create diversity in all of the schools in Hanford, CA.
My family lived on the northeast edge of town with an elementary school 5 blocks away. We were told we had to be bussed to the southeast side of town to an elementary school in the (ahem) “poorer” section of town. Of course the individuals from the other side of town were bussed 4 miles to our nearby elementary school. There were other schools in the district who had to do this. Idk if they continue to do this. We moved....
Worst two years of my elementary school career. It was open season on the cracker kids from across town.

Unless I’m mistaken, that’s Goethe Avenue, but the picture’s taken from the GPP side.

I count 27 streets going from Detroit into GPP. With two of them “fenced off.”

The remaining streeting entering GPP are from Grosse Point City.

Nothing stopping the so-called have-not neighborhood from sprucing up. Instead, the locals rob the poor hardworking convenience store and liquor store owners until they go out of business. Can’t blame anyone for keeping out crime.

I noticed that too, but have all but given up pointing such things out. My how the erstwhile stewards of our mother tongue have slipped.

The Packard plant has been sold, taxes paid, and demolition of the unstable parts of it. Despite its looks, they believe they'll be able to save 85% of the buildings. The developer plans to spend $500 milion over the next 15 years turning it into high dollar apartments, shopping, and office space.
