-— They were never good — but they hit a moment when whining disguised as singing and angst replacing meaning somehow rung a bell.

Luckiest no-talent group since Fabian. -—

Bono can’t sing and The Edge can’t play guitar. Yet they’re greater than the sum of their parts. They’re a very good band. “War” was an excellent album. Then Brian Eno produced “The Unforgettable Fire,” improving their sound immeasurably. Finally, “Achtung Baby” ranks up there with the all-time great rock albums.

I blame them for the decline of “music” (two alternating notes notes notes notes notes notes notes notes notes notes ntoes).

The “Edge” (really, he STILL calls himself that?) gives up the game in the documentary “It Might Get Loud”. He admits that his diddling on a guitar doesn’t sound like much of anything without effects pedal, and he has a different set of pedals plugged together for EVERY SINGLE SONG.

Whatever happened to melody?

How do you make money giving the whole album away? Did they try to record these as “sales”?

If you are "omnipresent" you get the magazine covers/press, song placement, and big concert tours (which include merch sales in addition to tickets).

When Prince returned to a major label (Sony) after years of self-release, he had them give away his CD to every concert attendee. He got his first radio hit in years that way.

After all this time, I could not name any of the other guys in U2 if my life depended on it, and they’ve been active for as long as Madonna. I would not recognize any of their faces either.

Well there's "the cute one", "the brooding one", "the funny one"...

Oh wait, that's these guys...

Right, today it is pop albums, tomorrow it is “history in the making” with some political message (END CLIMATE CHANGE NOW, PUSH FOR TOTAL NUCLEAR DISARMAMENT, GIVE TO KATRINA VICTIMS, etc.)

Even Myspace sold a log-in page ad that EVERYONE had to view (full page graphic) to MoveOn.Org blaming Bush for “Katrina”. It was up at least a week if I recall.

And don’t forget that the Obama pushed for an “emergency broadcast system” ability to push messages to your phones.

(I’ve heard even from U2 fans, that this album was crap, but I am too lazy to find out for myself even though I have an iTunes account).

The word on one Recording/Tech site from guys who have a pretty fair amount of respect for the band is that it is amateurish, or a step back in terms of production.

Weird Al’s newest stuff had my kids snorting & chuckling for a week.
He created a new generation of fans in my house.
Now they’re upset he wasn’t picked for Superbowl half time

Seems to me the problem is Apple forcing the download to all iTunes users. If U2 wants to give away their music, that's their business. It's Apple that forced the download without offering an option.

The real problem is that flac files are pretty large. If you have a data plan that's not very large, this could cost you if you were already close to your limit.

As a longtime U2 fan, I was disappointed by the album. It definitely would have flopped if released on its own. Or it could be that the band just gave Apple a bunch of useless outtakes and are saving their better material for their next real album.

Sirius radio is playing the hell out of that "Miracle of Joey Ramone" single for some strange reason. It's an awful song.

One has to go into the “purchased” section and select it for download...it’s not “pushed”...if you don’t want it, don’t download it.

I downloaded it just to see what U2 was about...never really listened to any of their stuff except for radio play...there are a couple of songs that I like.

I’m pretty ambivalent about this release and it seems like it wants to play more than any other songs on my ipod...so it will be coming off because I’m getting annoyed at its apparent “supremacy” over the rest of my library.

They didn’t give it away. Apple was dumb enough to buy it.

I never had my iTunes set up to do this, but apparently, people’s beef is that you can set up iTunes to automatically download things you have purchased, which isn’t a big deal normally. . . however, if Apple is purchasing things for you, then it becomes an issue.

Just be thankful it wasn’t a Justin Bieber album.

"...you can set up iTunes to automatically download things you have purchased..."

I wasn't aware of that...thanks for the info.

"...if Apple is purchasing things for you, then it becomes an issue."

Agreed...

Grrrrr. ExACTLY.

That last one really ticked me off (the emergency broadcast system)

Teed me off just as much as these idiotic signs on the highway, paid for with lots of taxpayer money, that tell you not to drink and drive or use your cell phone, or whatever.

That just burns me.
