'People were surprised that we wouldn't abort our Down's syndrome baby - it made me so angry'

Tom tells of the ignorance they faced, and the incredible moments they shared while bringing up Rosie…

‘The pregnancy was unplanned, so I’d already been through the standard worry, mainly about our financial situation. Then when we went for our 12-week scan, everything seemed fine and I felt happier. It was then my wife, Karen, now 39, decided to have the Bart’s screening test, which can indicate conditions such as Down’s syndrome.

The test is offered to all mums-to-be, but it’s not compulsory. I think it was instinct on her part – we’d declined it with our other kids, Harry, now 11, and Joe, eight, and had no complications.

Our results came back a week later with a 1 in 12 chance of our baby having Down’s syndrome. In the UK, 1 in 200 is classed as high, so 1 in 12 felt almost inevitable. When Karen called with the results, I rushed to be with her.

Karen cried a lot over the next 24 hours. I had to be strong for my wife, but I was lost. We had serious decisions to face – could we cope with a baby with special needs? How did we feel about abortion?

The hospital offered us an amniocentesis test, to find out for sure. This is where a sample of amniotic fluid is taken to give a near 100% accurate result. We took the amniocentesis and six anxious days later, doctors confirmed our baby would have Down’s syndrome. Karen and I both wanted to carry on with the pregnancy – we didn’t even consider the alternative, so when the question was raised by staff we dismissed it. They seemed surprised. I assume because a shocking 90% of UK pregnancies with Down’s syndrome are terminated.

Pro life ping (non-Satanic variety).

This scenario always has bothered me — a test to see if you should kill your child is wrong no matter what.

You get the child God provided — it is part of the larger Plan.

Good. It should bother you. It should bother you enough to not let these people in your life, near your family. Remove them from your social media. Quit your job if you have to. Because a war is coming. Black and white. Good and evil. Better be on the good side, because the bad are going to fertilize the fields.

Downs Syndrome babies now survive most of the time. They usually didn't live much beyond their 25th birthday. Now they do.
Our local Safeway hired a young man with DS. I saw him around for only a couple of months. Then, never again.

DS couples also now have the "right" to get married, even if they really don't know what it's all about. They can also have children, though that doesn't often happen because of the obvious reason.

The value of life.

The ancient Greeks and Romans often set their "imperfect" babies out to sea and let the ocean take them away. So did the Polynesians...and they had MANY of them because of the island-inbreeding. Sad.
That's why the Polynesian women LOVED those foreign sailors: NEW BLOOD.

The sad fact is that of those who get a positive result from this test, 90% abort their babies, thus depriving their babies of life, and themselves of what may be the most meaningful experience they will ever have. Those who have Downs babies are just about unanimous in their feeling blessed.

I know couples in the later range of childbearing years who have simply found no reason for this test because they are committed to their baby's life regardless. These people are known as Christians.

It does not bother me at all you know why?

Some people have Trisomy 21 and then some people are just retards.

Love the people with Trisomy 21 and forgive the retards. Know what I mean?

But the test isn’t to decide whether or not to kill one’s child. It’s to inform the parents of any “issues” and let them have information to make informed choices.

I recall with all four of my pregnancies, especially considering all four were medically “high risk” that these tests provided medical information.

One of the questions for parents is to know what can be expected. I chose not to know, even with having the tests, because it wouldn’t change the decision to not “terminate” the pregnancy. I didn’t want to spend the rest of my pregnancy worrying about the “what ifs” but some prospective parents don’t think/feel that way.

Advances in medicine usually come with negatives, imo.

What’s not bothering you? If someone walked up to my wife and told them to abort my kid I’d be going to jail for a few nights.

Evil doesn’t bother you? Well it bothers me, and I think evil men should be mercilessly destroyed.

Because a war is coming.

War? Between black and white. I doubt it.

My husband and I visited Africa...Kenya...some years ago and I have only two words for it (and Kenya was one of the better-off countries because of all the British years): PIT HOLE.

There was, during the "Black Power" and "Black Panthers" movements, a bump of "back-to-Africa" movements.
They all FAILED miserably because it DIDN'T take rocket science to understand that our POOREST blacks in the U.S.A. live MUCH better than MOST sub-Sahara MIDDLE-CLASS Africans.

Also, MOST black Americans have SOME white in them and they DO NOT FIT in Africa. The Africans are EBONY!! I saw one "African-American" middle-aged couple over there. They were NOT with our tour.

They looked like fat, happy, middle-aged Americans with a sun-tan. That is how "white" they looked compared to the Kenyans. They were SO OUT OF PLACE there. They DID look bewildered. I didn't blame them. They were fish out of water over there.

Why would any "poor" blacks leave their Title 8 housing, their food stamps and any/all the other perks they get from being poor, black, uneducated and thereby unemployed? They may, can and do live off Uncle Sam their ENTIRE lives.

Think of the GENERATIONS of African-Americans who have been on welfare. Sad, sad, sad.

I can’t forgive any man or woman that willingly murders or endangers an innocent persons life. I understand what you are saying.

Anyone who condones abortion in any save ONE exception is an accomplice to murder. They have heard our argument, and they continue doing it. No my FRiend they are not retards, they are cold, evil, demons, they know exactly what they are doing, and will be punished. In this life, and the next.

My daughter is now 16 and they asked if we wanted an amino test, saying it came with the “small risk” of going in to labor at 16 weeks. My husband spoke up before I did and said we didn’t need that test as we would accept our child however she was. (That’s also when we found out she was a she.) I got flack when I told this story because a “friend” said “you let your husband decide?” We aren’t friends anymore. I told her my husband and I shared the same values and he knew I felt the same way.
