My sense of smell varies vastly from one day to another...
I hesitate to guess what THAT might mean.

Seems like they are going to scare a whole bunch of people for nothing. There are many reasons for losing your sense of smell.

So never again tell someone he/she could use a shower.
They’re just helping you feel alive.

My sense of smell and taste were fine until about 8-10 years ago.
I used ZiCam for a cold and within days both senses were greatly diminished ... and have never really recovered.

I had a chili dog for lunch and then walked the dog - on the way back, something happened - I’ll be fine.

They could have also overtaxed their sense of smell that day. All they would need is a change of diet and underwear.

When you get Parkinson’s Disease or other neuro-degenerative brain disorders, olfactory bulb is the first thing effected. Very often the first symptom of Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s is “my wife’s cooking has gotten really stale”. That said, most elderly people lose their sense of smell atleast partially so no need to worry too much absent other symptoms.

I am not at all surprised that 430 of 3005 people ages 57 to 85 had died 5 years later.

Smell is the first and most persistent sense (it’s how human beings identify their mothers and then places where they have been), so it’s reasonable that when it disappears, you no longer need it, so to speak.

I lost my sense of smell a few years back after a skull fracture. This happens in bleeding in the prefrontal lobe. I sometimes returns, but after all this time mine won’t. I feel lucky though - after this I found that two of my friends lost smell and TASTE in car wrecks. I don’t miss the smell of skunks (or farts)
