A weakening sense of smell could mean death is near
Washington Post ^ | 10-2-2014 | Rachel Feltman and Elahe Izadi

Smelly socks have never seemed so life-affirming. According to a study published in PLOS ONE, olfactory dysfunction -- a weakening sense of smell -- is a strikingly good indicator of imminent death.

Five years later, the researchers found that 430 of the original participants had died. Even when they adjusted their analysis to control for age, gender, socioeconomic status, race, and overall health, they found that those with mild to severe smell loss had been more likely to die. Those with severe loss of smell were four times more likely to have died than the superior sniffers.

My sense of smell varies vastly from one day to another...

I hesitate to guess what THAT might mean.

Seems like they are going to scare a whole bunch of people for nothing. There are many reasons for losing your sense of smell.

So never again tell someone he/she could use a shower.

They’re just helping you feel alive.

My sense of smell and taste were fine until about 8-10 years ago.
I used ZiCam for a cold and within days both senses were greatly diminished ... and have never really recovered.

I had a chili dog for lunch and then walked the dog - on the way back, something happened - I’ll be fine.

They could have also overtaxed their sense of smell that day. All they would need is a change of diet and underwear.

Couldn’t one make the same statistical claim about eyesight, touch, hearing?

Indeed, all of one’s faculties decline with age - and they decline faster the closer death one is

When you get Parkinson’s Disease or other neuro-degenerative brain disorders, olfactory bulb is the first thing effected. Very often the first symptom of Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s is “my wife’s cooking has gotten really stale”. That said, most elderly people lose their sense of smell atleast partially so no need to worry too much absent other symptoms.

I am not at all surprised that 430 of 3005 people ages 57 to 85 had died 5 years later.

My sense of smell has been greatly weakened for several years for unknown reasons. It is a blessing when the dog farts.
