I suspect his attitude in 1953 was rather more upbeat than in 2011.

Interestingly, Whitey's younger brother Billy was the President of the Massachusetts Senate and later the president of the University of Massachusetts.

He was elected President of the Senate in 1978 and was re-elected every two years to 1996, making his time as Senate president the longest tenure in Massachusetts history. I've heard that's actually pretty common, that the homeless will commit a crime serious enough to land them in jail for the winter and they don't have to worry about being outdoors or having to go the the rescue mission where there's actually accountability.
