Travel to Mexico
Me | 09/28/2014 | Bushwon

Posted on 09/28/2014 6:05:57 PM PDT by Freedom56v2

Daughter is traveling to Mexico City, and I am looking for some useful travel references...some first-hand Freeper info/advice, or books/websites that have a "step-by-step" account of what to expect when she arrives at the airport.

She has never traveled to a Mexico (or any other country forthat matter), and it has been a long time since I traveled to Mexico, so I am looking for the latest information to provide to her. Thank you for your help.

Other than the airport being ridiculously huge, there is nothing weird or special about it. One thing, do not under any circumstances lose the little tourist card you get. You must turn that in when you are leaving the country else there will be hassle. Keep it in your passport, and you should have it on you at all times.

Thanks so much. The wedding guests are scheduled for some group tours — not sure exactly what...but day tours until wedding which will be an all day/all night affair.

I have told her about the water, and to ask about water every where...you bring out good point about food tho...unless whole fruit pieces, etc. recall cooked much safer than raw.

As one who's done some international traveling...including to some pretty downtrodden, chaotic places...one of the few places that frightens me so much that I'll never voluntarily go there is Mexico. In spite of having visited Africa,Asia and part of South America you'd have to hold a gun to my head to convince me to go to Mexico. Why? Simple! IMO *every* person in the country...cop....judge...politician...lawyer...common citizen....is completely corrupt and wouldn't think twice about murdering you and taking everything you have.

Others may disagree,however.

Depend on people she knows. Agreed. Tho I do want OPtion B, C D, backup in case there are issues...such as airport no-show etc. I think once she get’s to hotel with the wedding group things will be clear sailing, it is just the time from drop off at airport till she checks in at the hotel that concerns me...

tho the other advice from all is greatly appreciated. :)

Most toll roads are in central/west coast mexico, not many down the gulf coast.

Are you sure she should not travel to Canada first or perhaps Puerto Rico if she prefers to travel to a Spanish-speaking country?

I got Hepatitis A in Mexico, but I was working in a paper mill in Durango and the canteen was the most unsanitary place I’ve ever seen in my life. The dogs running around were the main dishwashers as near as I could tell. Or it could have been the snow-cone vendor on the street.

Hopefully she’s staying in a good hotel. Basic rule is only drink bottled water and brush your teeth with same. Stay away from salads because they may have been washed in local water.

Not sure I can be of much help, since I last visited Mexico City in 1989. However, some precautions in effect at that time are most likely valid today.

For one thing, if you use a service such as a taxi, have your shoes shined, etc., make sure to ask in advance what the price will be--otherwise, they can charge whatever they want. You might also carry your valuables in a "Mexican wallet" which can be strapped on your upper arm or leg or hung around your neck under your clothing.

I found the Metro (subway) to be useful and the downtown areas to be safe (remember, this was the 1970's-80's), in particular in the areas where the streets are named after rivers and foreign cities. However, certain tourist areas such as Plaza Garibaldi were full of hucksters seeking to separate tourists from their money.

When I was there, I dressed like a Mexican, in button-down shirts and slacks--no short pants, which would identify you as a tourist, and definitely no blue jeans with a white T shirt. This was effective in one instance when a Mexican family stopped their car and asked me directions, but still, many recognized me as a Norteamericano.

At the time, I found a guidebook entitled The People's Guide to Mexico (Santa Fe, NM: Muir, 1972) to be very useful. The book has been periodically updated, the latest edition having been published in 2012. The supplemental website offers tips on traveling to Mexico including how to cope with red tape, what sort of weather to expect, upcoming events, etc. It also includes a blog.

Hope this is of some help. And to your daughter, buen viaje!

She should just take one of the licensed taxis from the airport to the hotel. They have desks at the airport, you go up and tell them your destination, you pay and they give you a ticket for the cab, and then you go out and get in the taxi of whatever company it is. They’re all ok. I left my laptop in one and they actually got it back to me...

Tell her to start taking acidipholis (sp) to get her body pumped up with good digestive track bacteria. Tell her to have Imodium AD before she goes as plane rides with the runs is no fun at all. She better be able to take a week off when she gets back just in case she gets ill.

And, it’s quite serious that she realize the hell hole it is and never go it alone. Funny as we have friends who lived there and said it’s safe and when they sold their home, they got taken to the cleaners with govt. docs and won’t go there now!!! We got taken at a Pemex station, my husband followed while jogging on the beach and a Dr. visit when we returned. Not our idea of a vacation...

As with many Freepers, you could not pay me to go there since they are one country that is wrecking our country in many ways.

Agreed! Be aware of surroundings. I have told her this and will show her this thread.

I have made photocopy of numerous documents for her to take with her and store here at home.

Wish she knew more Spanish. I am thinking there may be a phone App for translation.

No ideas on driving thru Mexico in this day and age, tho my sister-in-law and hubby live in Belize now. They seem to like it.

Take a Cab from airport to your hotel. Plenty of cabs in front of the airport. Also, use cabs that hotel recommends, if satisfied with your driver arrange for him to pick you up and take you to safe places. Zona Rosa is a good tourist area. Sanborn restruants are all over the city and are a good choice for food. Drink only bottled water. Exchange money at a bank (M-F). You may want to get quick money for cab fair, snacks etc. at the airport. Rates are higher though. Pay in Pasos not US. Hotels can set up bus tours of the city
Have fun........
