As one who's done some international traveling...including to some pretty downtrodden,chaotic places...one of the few places that frightens me so much that I'll never voluntarily go there is Mexico.In spite of having visited Africa,Asia and part of South America you'd have to hold a gun to my head to convince me to go to Mexico.Why? Simple! IMO *every* person in the country...cop....judge...politician...lawyer...common citizen....is completely corrupt and wouldn't think twice about murdering you and taking everything you have.

Thanks for your assessment. I truly agree. Sadly, I knew when she befriended this girl, her “home town” would be “problematic”

I will share this post with her...She will be there for 6 days, 2 are traveling, so I am really hoping that with good advice, logistics, etc. she will be OK

We grew up vacationing in Mexico. It was relatively safe, if you stayed together, went to common places, stayed at well-known hotels and stayed away from backroads, etc.

Now days? No way. We’ve not traveled there in over 15 years. None of our friends go, anymore, either. And, we knew one couple that owned property there and would go several times per year. They no longer go. Just not worth the worry.

I live in South Texas ... I know many folks with Relatives in Mexico ... The Holidays are the worst time to travel there, and everything that you posted is true.
I know a young man that considered himself very lucky to escape on foot without ID and Money in the middle of nowhere while the “Police” were arguing over how to split up his belongings and who had to watch him.
He was found by US Border Patrol without shoes or shirt just across the border after what he thinks was 4 days.
He was a kid that graduated High School with my Son and at the time he was a Pre-Med Student in San Antonio.
He said he would never return ... he told me that story 3 years ago and it has gotten worse in Mexico since then. (Also worse here as the kid has yet to recover physically from the ordeal, he is still in pretty rough shape), it’s a sad, sad story for such a promising young man.
