MICHIGAN, N.D. -- A Fort Totten man is dead and three children are hurt after the car they were in hit a moose late Monday night in northeast North Dakota.
North Dakota State Patrol Sgt. Joe Knowski said the 2003 Chevy Cavalier was headed east on U.S. 2 about a mile east of Michigan about 10:05 p.m. when it hit the moose, which was in the middle of the highway.
The Cavalier rolled numerous times before coming to rest on the south edge of the roadway, ejecting the driver and all three children, who are 10, 5, and 2, from the vehicle.
The 37-year-old driver died at the scene.
All three boys were taken to Altru Hospital in Grand Forks for treatment of their injuries.
None of the people in the vehicle were wearing seat belts. The moose died on impact.

I travel to northwest mountains in Maine and seeing moose is a common event. Seeing them at night is absolutely frightening because they seem to be as black as the night. We came so close to hitting one that it actually kicked and dented the front license plate as we were breaking to stop in time and d it was running away. My teeth chattered uncontrollably for about 30 min before I could finally get them to stop. I don’t recall ever being so scared, the whole thing happened so fast and yet it felt like everything was happening in slow motion.
I always wear my seatbelt. My comment was more to the veracity of the officer’s comment in the post which I replied to. Deceit or fear mongering are not needed to convey a truth. Seat belts, usually, help save lives.
I wear my seatbelt every single time.
I completely agree. If not an apocryphal story, the cop is full of it.
Coming back from northern Maine on night last fall - back as ink, speed limit 75 - I was going 70 (didn't dare go any lower as drivers whizzing by at 80 when -blam- the biggest deer I ever saw dropped out of the sky 3 feet in front of me. (He had come out of woods off a knoll and lept onto the highway, landing in front of me from his downward leap. No avoiding him. Fortunately, after being hit, his whole body flew completely over the car - and although the car - Suburu Outback- was totaled, the impact in the passenger compartment was so slight that the air bags didn't even deploy - Neither I nor my passenger had a scratch.
I'm also a professional driver and didn't over-react so didn't do the ditch and roll overs, just pulled to breakdown lane...albeit rather quickly.
Got me another Suburu! Suburu's safety ratings are well earned.
That means it must be a black car. If they mention that, they're racist.
Must have been rural Texas. Happens with some frequency.
Yikes. RIP.
Actually, that crash happened between Cedar Park and Austin on 183. Back then, the speed limit was 45 MPH and has gone to 55 since 183A [toll road] opened a few years ago. I missed the crash scene by less than five minutes and traffic was backed up for several miles.
My oldest daughter’s mother-in-law told her kids that seat belts would KILL them! and she was a retired NURSE!
Well, our granddaughter was in an accident on the way to nurse training school.
She was the only one of 4 girls in the car buckled.
AND the only one who was hospitalized!
Broken hip and pelvis.
A four year old is too small to be properly and safely restrained by a conventional seat belt. That child should have been in a child restraint seat. And it sounds like a good thing that granny’s retired, cause if she thinks not wearing a seat belt is somehow safer than having one on, she’s a moron.
You have never seen, a crime scene. Much less, photographed a smig of reality, little boy. You are a poser.
Probably needed new set of undies
