Thinking of Moving to Boulder...
My fevered brain | Madmominct

Posted on 09/25/2014 2:36:54 PM PDT by madmominct

I know it may be insane, but I'm thinking of moving to Colorado, Boulder specifically. Do any of you live there and do you think it's possible for a 62-year-old single female Conservative to live happily there? My reasons are that I hear it's beautiful, closer to my family in Los Angeles (but I don't want to live in Calif), has seasons and is a place I haven't lived before. I want to start over in a new place. Unfortunately it's a nest of libs, but where isn't? Just wondering - SOMEONE out there in Freeperland must live there! Thanks in advance for your thoughts and info.

That area, Broomfield, etc. on North I-25 is growing too fast, too much traffic and people. The Denver urban sprawl is reaching all the way north to Hwy 52 now.

Home values in Weld County have soared in the past year, people who bought houses at $250-260K are now selling them for $360K+!!

There also great opportunities in the front range areas now, just up the first set of hills.

Trulia, Zillow etc. are great on line resources to search for homes and land.

I used to live next door in Louisville. You get all of the benefits of living near The Flatirons without having to deal with the daily grind of Boulder liberalism.

Boulder has some great places to eat, drink, and be merry. Some great music venues and the Pearl Street Mall is a great place to hang out on a Sunday afternoon. If you live in Louisville all that great stuff is just a few minutes away. The house prices are more reasonable, as well as the local taxes and regulations.

I moved there in the early 90's as house prices were starting to skyrocket. Imagine my surprise when the tax assessor lowered the mill levy so that even though my home appraisal went up, my property tax stayed pretty much the same!

Also, at the time it was the only city in the area that didn't require guns to be locked in a safe when not in use, etc. Boulder and Lafayette (on the other side of Louisville) seemed to be trying to outdo themselves in nibbling at the 2nd Amendment, but Louisville wasn't having any of it. Louisville has its own quaint downtown with a classic bar and good restaurants and it seems to be a more family friendly place than Boulder ... unless you're talking about the Rainbow Family which is one family no city should want to be friendly with.

Also,

Denver is only a two hour flight to LAX.
I never fly into LAX though, Bob Hope Intl in Burbank is THE BEST!!

Small and it has TWO baggage claim areas!!

Southwest flies to BUR non-stop.

If you want to live in a beautiful Colorado town, Boulder doesn’t have to be your only choice.

I would run from the high cost of Boulder, not to mention the congestion and extreme let-wing politics and laws.

California is not that bad, as long as you stay away from large cities. It also has Proposition 13. The weather is good, unless you insist on having heavy snow to shovel and ice to fall on and break your bones :-) It will be also closer to LA. It's a big deal to not have a need to fly - the road to airport, all the procedures, waiting, luggage are even more wasteful than the flight itself.

I have a friend in Denver, and he complains that the altitude is killing him. Denver is at 5,280 feet, Boulder is even higher, at 5,430 feet - so perhaps you want to check if you can handle the altitude.

Look at my earlier post. If you want to live in the Denver area you should check out Louisville which is NW of Denver bordering Boulder.

Nope - I don’t smoke weed.

If you move to Boulder you would end up smoking weed just to cope with the whackos.

Just kidding.

There are some conservatives in Boulder but not enough to make the place tolerable.

Check out the Western Slope (Western half) of Colo.

Welcome!

Looks like a safe city. You can find other data such as demographics here => http://www.city-data.com/city/Boulder-Colorado.html

If you visit Golden, stay at the Golden inn on the main drag. It’s close to everything and has parking. Mrs Stand and I are planning to get a place there when our 15 year old graduates . Until then also consider beautiful oklahoma! Of 77 counties not one voted for the dogeater in two elections. Or Kerry for that matter. Just waiting for Texas to secede ....

If you live among liberals, your standard of living will constantly decline and your taxes will constantly rise.

Take that to the bank.

Boulder is in a beautiful setting. It has all the interesting and nutty accouterments of a college town. If you are secure in your beliefs and don't mind being around liberals go for it.

I live in a liberal neighborhood in Denver (well, that' pretty much the whole city) and have no problem with it. It's a beautiful area and I network with like minded people. I have even found a lot of my neighbors are pretty nice people - as long as we don't talk politics.

Probably the biggest downside is expense. Growth restrictions were put in place years ago and Boulder proper can be expensive. There have been several posts by others here who live in Boulder County, but not in the city proper. Good luck!

I’ve spent some time in Durango, and was fond of it. Good weather variety, pretty sights, and if you want a weekend in Switzerland, Ouray is right up the road. They voted for Obama (not by much) but also voted for Bush. Their Congressman’s a Republican.

Please Google “Durango, CO”. We need conservatives here.

And we have an airport so you could fly to visit family.

Consider any town on the western slope (west of the Continental Divide). Nicer people, no traffic, incredible natural beauty and recreation right out your door, and work skills are in demand so jobs are easy to find, assuming you have a skill.

Traffic is horrible in Boulder and it’s very expensive to live there. I don’t even need to get to the politics.
