The uproar over President Obama's "Latte Salute" as he exited Marine One Tuesday in New York has reached critical mass with social media outlets like Twitter and Facebook ablaze with indignation and outrage over his disrespectful and half-hearted gesture to the two Marines standing at attention for their Commander-In-Chief.

Interestingly, a YouTube clip from the 1992 film Scent of a Woman has begun to go viral on Facebook.

Yes it is...and it’s my prerogative to call him a jerk for doing it.

Apparently, the custom of presidents returning military salutes is fairly recent, beginning with Ronald Reagan. For instance, General Dwight Eisenhower did not return military salutes as president.

Reagan's gesture was a heart-felt expression of appreciation and respect for the US military and it's soldiers. Presidents who don't feel similarly inspired should just dispense with the salute instead of half-assing it. Do it right or just don't do it - it's not required by protocol.

Thanks!

I didn’t think I would see something so disrespectful.

A few years back, wasn’t it Clinton who said that obama should be serving them coffee? One of the Marines should have grabbed the cup.

The President of the United States can do a proper salute, a latte salute or no salute at all ... according to the Marine Corps.” I think that about sums it up.... Next topic?

Yes, a "proper" salute worthy of a president of this country to a member of our armed forces..........

next topic: Military respect.........I think that about sums it up.
