MUNICH (AFP) -- Germany's world-famous Oktoberfest kicked off Saturday with the traditional tapping of the first barrel of beer, as millions of revellers are set to soak up the frothy atmosphere in the 16-day annual extravaganza.
With the cry of "O'zapft is" ("The keg is tapped"), the amber fluid officially began to flow at noon after Munich's mayor, Dieter Reiter, with due pomp and ceremony, took a mallet and in four swings breached the 200-litre barrel.

Went last year and 2011. We had a great time, and it’s not only beer tents, it’s more like a large state fair. Well, we went mostly for the beer. Augustiner, Spaten and Paulaner, yum. Also they have Lowenbrau but it’s nothing like the Lowenbrau here. Fresh beer is awesome.

My brother in law was in the Air Force in the early 1970s and was stationed in South Korea. He had leave and went to Oktoberfest with some buddies. He told me after two days of steady drinking he woke up on a train in Italy wearing somebody elses jacket. He said it was a tiny little village were the train tracks just ended. The folks of the town helped him and invited him into their homes for home made pizza & wine.
