ARLINGTON, Texas -- Seattle Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon said Sunday he's concerned about the lack of African-American players and managers in baseball.

In the last few weeks, two African-American managers left the game in Houston's Bo Porter, who was fired, and on Friday, Texas' Ron Washington resigned, leaving McClendon as the only black man as a manager.

Imagine the uproar if a white insider minimized basketball players in terms of color or lack thereof in such a manner.

It’s very true though. After a decade or so of some excellent black baseball players, everyone wants to be a football or basketball player and no one wants to play baseball.

As it is baseball is probably the most racially mixed sport there is.

Besides, football and basketball offer much better opportunities for a college education than baseball, assuming the player goes to class and works at it.

The number of African-American players in the game is down to 7.8 percent. In 1995, African-Americans comprised of 19 percent of the big league rosters and in 1975 it was its highest at 27 percent.

The number of European-American players is down also. The number of American players, period, is down. Meanwhile, the number of African-Dominicans is way, way up.

Most teams even have Asian players. My Tigers don’t have any Asian players on the active roster but manager Brad Ausmus is Jewish along with Ian Kinsler.

Baseball clearly needs more black, Muslim, homosexual, illegal, vegan, climate sensitive players and managers.
