5 Ways Movies Get Gunfights Wrong (Based on Experience)
Cracked.com ^ | September 07, 2014 | Robert Evans, Greg Spyridis

Everybody knows action movies are fake, but that doesn't change the fact that they're responsible for approximately 100 percent of our education on the subject of guns and combat. That's why the average person's knowledge of those things is hilariously, sometimes fatally, wrong.

To sort out fact from fiction, we interviewed two decorated combat veterans who also have experience working in Hollywood. Matt Wagner is a former Army Ranger who saw combat all over the world, including Africa, South America, and Afghanistan, then was a technical consultant for a number of Hollywood productions, including Stargate SG-1 and The Colt. Jerry McFakename (not his real name) was a private military and security contractor who worked throughout Central and South America and spent time as a stuntman and fight choreographer. They told us ...

Oh yeah. It’s a shame that a certain throat-slashing ex-football player had to ruin the movie franchise, too.

And rarely leave a hole, let alone a mark of any kind, especially on cars.

My only experience in gunfights is limited to years of paintball. The sum of my experience is keep moving and seek cover when reloading. My strategy for home defense is to be sure your target isn’t your family and unload into them.

I have read that the street shoot out in Closed Range is one of the most realistic shoot out scenes ever in a western.

Not much accuracy and everyone not too far away from each other.

But my favorite scene is when Costner just walks up to a bad guy and asks him if he killed his friend. The guy says yes. Costner just draws and shoots the guy and walks on.

Saw that in a bad gang movie. Even better was the character using the revolver complaining that he didn’t realize that he was out of ammo because of the silencer.

Mythbusters also had an episode where they shot up neon signs to see if they could get a shower of fireworks like the movies. Busted.

They also had a shooting at people underwater show. High velocity rifle rounds were the worst. They pretty much explode on impact with the water. You were safe a foot under water. Musket balls otoh were deadly down to 4 feet.

I like the way that whenever someone in a movie or on TV points a gun at someone else, the gun goes “click”.

None of my firearms does that. Maybe all of mine are defective or something.
