UK Muslim Urges Peppa Ban Over Son’s Pig Plans (Son Wants to Be Pig, Not Doctor)

A British Muslim, dismayed by his young son’s wish to become a pig rather than a doctor, has taken on a mission to effect the removal from television of Peppa Pig, the much-loved animal character whom he claims inspired his child’s unusual ambition, according to the Daily Mirror.

Zayn Sheikh’s campaign includes a Facebook page called “Muslims against Peppa Pig“ that features a video – shared more than 9,000 times – explaining his reasons for pursuing the ban.

“Some of you, right, might have seen this abominable creature before, right, this Peppa Pig. Haram pig,” Sheikh says in the video.

“As Muslims it is very important that we do not eat meat of the pork,” he explains.

“It is completely wrong that our kids are being shown these things on TV and my son ... he wants to be a pig now.”

“I think that we need to change this so I'm going to set up a Facebook group, ‘Muslims against Peppa Pig,’ and instead, because children still need cartoons to develop their minds, I propose we introduce Abdullah the cat.”

In addition to the Facebook page and video, Sheikh has also collected more than 100 signatures on an online petition called “Remove Peppa Pig from TV.”

But Sheikh’s campaign to ban the pig is facing resistance, with thousands of Peppa fans determined to save the character from the chopping block.

They have even set up a Facebook group called “Save Peppa Pig from Muslim Fanatics” whose introduction states: “Please all you Peppa Pig fans must post your favourite piggy videos and photos right away and save our precious pig.”

And on Sheikh’s own Facebook page, the most frequently posted retort went along the lines of “Just don’t let your kid watch the show!”

I had a Jewish friend who worked in a super market and he was in charge of the deli meat section. He moved the kosher sign to the left of the bacon sign, so it looked like it said, “kosher bacon.”

I’ve been friends with, worked with, worked for, went to school with and lived next door to many Jews over the years, some more religious than others but I’ve never known a Jew, even very observant ones, to freak out over pigs (especially cartoon pigs) or pork products like Muslims do.

Growing up in Baltimore, there was a locally produced and very popular brand of ham; Mash’s Ham. The owner of the company, Nathan Mash, who was very obviously Jewish, sometimes along with his brother Howard Mash, did the TV commercials, which were run heavily around Christmas and Easter and Nathan would rearrange the letters of Mash’s to spell the word Ham, and then say; What did with do with the extra S? “That S stands for salt and we throw that away”.

And their hams were very good and not overly salty – the brand is still around but now owned by Eskay. Around Easter my mom would ask my dad what she should make for Easter Sunday dinner, ham or lamb, and my dad would always say, “Get one of those Mash’s “Kosher” Hams”. In fact I knew a lot of people, even some Jews who called it Mash’s “Kosher” Ham.

Nathan Mash passed away back in the late 90’s.

100 mooselimb signatures? That’s 99 more than needed to ban something in the UK.

It is actually very funny. And it’s a good show for her age.

My great nieces love Peppa Pig and I’ve watched it with them many times, it’s not nearly as annoying and it doesn’t “talk” down to them as some other kid’s shows for the pre-schooler set do; it’s rather charming IMO.

Professional courtesy. Can't eat your cousins.
