Behind the Falls, agreed!

On the way there, perhaps stop in NY's Letchworth State Park?

I've never stayed there before but I have driven over the bridge that links the US and Canada that overlooks Niagara Falls (can't recall the bridge's name).I can assure you that it's an impressive sight.

Niagara - On - The Lake and Wineries all over the place. Stay in St. Catherines and save some money.

Take the Skylon in the evening , especially on Fridays with fireworks around 9:30 PM

These are two ladies in their late forties. Thanks!

Before I offer a suggestion, how much do they mean to you?

"get some ideas"

Yes, and if I was around Marilyn Monroe at the time, I probably would get some ideas.

Living in the area, the US side has nice State Parks
http://exploringmonkey.com/niagara-falls-attractions-for-touristsvisitors-part-2/
The city does have its social burden problems, but I haven’t found it an issue with the parks at the Falls. The Canadian side was never urban/industrial (or had mob unions) and has most of the “tourist” commercial development, as well as beautiful parks and views as well.
The US Maid of the Mist is available from the Observation Tower and I found it less crowded than the Canadian side (which is now a different company).
If you don’t mind dropping a few $$, the jet boat rides can be had from either side of the border not too far downstream. Do it on a warm day, you WILL be soaked!

Agree with previous posters on Fort Niagara, Its been around for over 250 years. Niagara on the Lake (Canadian side @ Lake Ontario & Niagara River) Is a nice walking/shopping/theater town
https://www.niagaraonthelake.com/
When crossing the border, you want to be opposite the Canadian shoppers visiting the US outlet malls! It can be brutal if not. Border crossing wait times (by bridge)are on this website.

There is also a wonderful little restaurant in Lackawana, a suburb south of Buffalo - a little Italian restaurant that has world class lasagna. The restaurant’s name is Mulberry Italian Ristorante, and it was featured on the Food Channel on Drive-ins, Diners, and Dives. http://www.mulberryitalianristorante.com/ It is a neighborhood place and doesn’t look like much from the outside, but it is a slice of heaven inside.
