They may not actually be squatters and they should have some rights in that case.

They have the right to leave peacefully when informed that they are occupying the property without the owner's permission.

That is all.

I suspect this may be the situation.

Yes, I've heard that the electric company does NOT take kindly to theft of power.

The strategy of making it look like the "squatters" crudely tampered with the meter is smart. The electric company will come out and remove the meter themselves.

Do the same thing with cable tv or satellite systems. Make it look like the squatters are stealing.

Again, use pry-bars and screwdrivers to gain access.

Get a really long hose, hook it to the neighbor's house some night and water the squatter's lawn 24/7.

Oh what fun that would be to see the confrontations.

“Yes, I’ve heard that the electric company does NOT take kindly to theft of power.”

Same with water. Theft of service is a felony.

Have a confidential informant snitch on the property and the Portland SWAT will break out their “lets play soldier” gear.

Unreal that this happens. I’ve been lucky with my rental house and had good tenants. My sister not so lucky. The court system is SOOOO anti-landlord it’s near impossible to get rid of human garbage like this. The tenants there didn’t pay rent for about 8 months while they filed complaint after complaint and trashed the house in retaliation.

Obama gimmedat land. Welcome to the new age of entitlement. It wouldn’t surprise me a bit if this squatter is on every single welfare program there is.

Water meter can be turned off with a “water key” available at any hardware store.

Gas meter can be turned off with a crescent wrench.

Electrical meter can be pulled by removing the retaining ring and pulling the meter straight out. This may not shut it off if it is one of the “bypass meters” like you see on commercial businesses. The retainer ring is flimsy enough that I usually just break them for time purposes.

I know! But there are legalities involved. You can’t just mess with service connections. They do not belong to you, but to the different service companies.
As for the electric meter, in Ohio, I think an electrician can pull it, not sure. But only the electric company can re-install it, and apply a new seal

LOL. You’re thinking of Old America, not New Amerika. Chicago police will simply watch as evicted tenants steal stoves and refrigerators. It’s the owner’s word against theirs. Who to believe?

Nylund called police and confronted the occupants, but said the officer was unable to do anything about it.

LOL! If the squatters don't pay the King's Rent for several years, SUDDENLY "the officer" will be able to "do something about it" - in violation of the Incorporated Fifth Amendment...

Gock the fuvernment.

The ground belongs to the person who paid for it.

The ground belongs to the King. The person who paid for it has all the other expenses, including the King's Rent.

Rights? Not so much.

You can bet that the King's Man would have had them out of there in a jiffy if the King's Rent had been in arrears...

You only think you own your house. You don’t really. You just pay for upkeep, insurance and taxes. If someone wants to waltz in and take what is “rightfully” theirs, well they can and will. Of course, if they get hurt on “your” property, you will be held responsible.

Fair enough - under those circumstances, if when they get hurt on my property, I will most definitely be responsible...
