Deaf and severely hearing impaired individuals could soon serve in the Air Force if legislation introduced in July by a California lawmaker is passed.
An Air Force captain convinced U.S. Rep. Mark Takano, D-California, to introduce a bill that would allow deaf and hearing impaired people to serve in the Air Force as part of a pilot or demonstration program.
Current Defense Department hearing requirements bar the deaf from serving, as well as individuals who currently require or previously used a hearing aid, or have a cochlear ear implant.

Even though I myself am disabled and have been since birth; this has to be one of stupidest ideas I have ever heard. It is one thing for a disabled person to work for the military as a civilian as I do; but, not active duty.
Exactly. What's next? Quadriplegic airmen? Sex change operations for active duty personel? The sky is the limit for these nut cases.
Deaf people have no business being AF pilots.
They may be able to “do some jobs”, but communication will present a problem unless everyone learns to sign or something.
Why not have blind people as pilots or quadriplegic people in the infantry?
Hey, let’s just make blind people pilots! Makes just as much sense.
Ok, I know this is USAF, but let’s say the Army is forced to accept deaf people; how to you tell him about the incoming? Sign language? What if he’s not looking?
Hope and change....
Can you hear me major Tom?
“Were all deaf on the Ramp....”
No need for earplugs !
Madness.
I wonder how he will get his commands and communicate with squadron.
U.S. Rep. Mark Takano, D-California should be indicted, tried, convicted, and sentenced for attempting giving aid and comfort to the enemy by introducing such a bill. The Air Force captain should be court-martialed as a co-conspirator.
Those who voted for Takano should stop stealing oxygen.
Well 30 years ago or so, the Cook County Democratic hired blind poll watchers for several wards in Chicago.
I still have the photograph of that individual siting at the table.
Cook County Democrat Party
Why doesn’t that surprise me?
Of course it is no surprise to anyone on FR that follows Chicago Rat style politics.
Because having standards to ensure America has the best military just might be discriminatory.......
Could somebody possibly mention ELITE IS THE GOAL!!!!
War is not about “fair”!
I worked with a hearing impaired person once. Didn’t think he was a bad person, but he was almost useless. There is another one who I see at my current job from time to time. He has a sign language assistant who goes with him everywhere.
Two employees for the price of one!!
FMCDH(BITS)
I rated H3 for my hearing test (disqualified from all branches of service) at Dallas MEPS in ‘86. The recruiter took one look at my ASVAB scores and waivered me in. And in the Air Force’s infinite wisdom they put me in communications...
