WAUKESHA, Wis. —As parents get their children ready to go back to school, getting them vaccinated is probably on the list.

A popular shot for young girls is the HPV vaccine, but a Waukesha mother said her daughter died hours after getting the shot.

You’re welcome.

Despite the anti-vaxxers and proponents of quackery who always show up in these threads, I know that plenty of people appreciate the information.

There is not a nurse out there who would vaccinate a septic child/teen.

Indeed. That is a troubling aspect of this story. Assuming the sore throat was the proximate cause of death (big assumption, since no autopsy results are out), I think the practitioner who gave the shot may be open to a malpractice suit.

That’s a huge assumption to make. The girl also vomited just before she died. It will be interesting to see the autopsy results.

Cervical cancer is not a punishment, neither is any multitude of undesirable consequences that occur from having sex outside of marriage. It is frequently prudent to be cautious about the safety of medications. The risk benefit ration for most who receive the HPV vaccine is good, however there will be cases of adverse events and it is not unreasonable for parents to be cautious.

That being said, remaining a virgin before marriage is something that will result in a happier adult child, which is something that all parents wish for their children and being cautious regarding the HPV vaccine is in no way similar to honor killings, and marrying off 13 year olds to 50 year old pedophiles.

The way some people here go on, I get the distinct impression that they look at HPV cancer as a sort of revenge/punishment for not remaining pure and chaste up until marriage. And this vindictiveness only seems to be directed at girls. I see this as very similar to some of the more radical Muslim traditions, where it is not uncommon to kill girls for "dishonoring" the family.

Certainly, there are many reasons to encourage kids to wait before becoming sexually active. Even in the absence of pregnancy and disease, the associated emotions with sexual behavior can be traumatic for a young person. But eventually, they will take that step--it's good for them to be protected when they do.

HPV strains 16 and 18 are responsible for 70% of all HPV caused cancers. The other oncogenic HPV viruses that are responsible for the remaining 30% are not as aggressive as those two strains. Sometimes, the less aggressive HPVs cause lesions that never develop into cancer.

The other two HPV strains in Gardisil (which are not in Cervarix) protect against HPV 6 and HPV 11, which are responsible for 90% of genital warts. Warts won’t progress to cancer, but they can cause some other problems... like blocking the urethra, which is a medical emergency.

I worked with a gynecologist on an HPV study once. She liked to show pictures. Pictures of HPV infected genitalia are not pretty.

I know, it makes absolutely no sense to me that people would rather risk their child getting a potentially deadly disease than to give him/her a little shot.

When I was pregnant, one of my friends who had just had a baby went to the local clinic for her post-partum check. She mentioned that the baby would not wake up. The doctor told her to bring in the baby immediately, which she did. Since we were overseas, a medevac flight had to be arranged to take the baby to a hospital. The baby died before the plane arrived to pick her up. She had meningitis, it killed her in hours.

Back then, there was no meningitis vaccine. I was horribly afraid my son would get meningitis.

Vomiting certainly is consistent with a bacterial infection.

It doesn’t prevent cancer. It can protect against 4 of the 100 or so strains of HPV (which self-resolves over 75% of the time).

Yes. It’s a money making product that has powerfully bad side effects. It can protect against some strains of HPV. Not necessarily the strains that might possibly lead to cancer.

Also, the previous report in a post about Hpv rates going down in teens? HIV often has zero known symptoms and teens don’t race to doctors. So no one would know that fact.

I would never give such a risky vaccine to my daughter.

You are goofy. And none too familiar with presentations.

Staphylococcus aureus can cause toxic shock syndrome. One symptom of toxic shock is vomiting. Hence, vomiting can be a sign of bacterial infection.

Vomiting can also be a sign of food poisoning, which also is caused by bacteria.

As far as presentations go, my knowledge of them is strictly limited to the descriptions in the medical literature--I am a researcher, not clinician.

And that has what, exactly, to do with protecting kids against a form of cancer that most often is spread by an activity that almost all of them will engage in at some point in their lives?

Remember, the point of HPV vaccination of preteens and early teens is to administer the whole series before the child even thinks about sex. The average age at first intercourse is about 17, which is why that age range was selected for this vaccination series. Encouraging pre-teens to have sex defeats the purpose of vaccinating them at that age in the first place.

Men also get HPV cancers. I'm curious--are you as much against boys receiving the vaccine as you are girls? Or are you okay with that--because, as we all know, boys play around?

Both HPV vaccines protect against HPV-16 and HPV-18, which are responsible for 70% of HPV caused cancers. Gardisil also protects against HPVs 6 and 11, which are responsible for 90% of genital warts. Warts do not cause cancer, but their growth can block the urethra or anus, which is a medical emergency.

Also, the previous report in a post about Hpv rates going down in teens? HIV often has zero known symptoms and teens don’t race to doctors. So no one would know that fact.

Are you familiar with PAP tests--those tests for HPV caused cancer that every woman is recommended to have starting when she is a teenager? Often an HPV molecular test is performed along with the PAP. That is how the data that were used to determine that HPV rates are falling were collected.

I’ll assume you realize sexual activity increased drastically after “The Pill” became available but you choose to ignore it.

You don’t really sound much like an “ex-dem.”

The push is on to only vaccinate the girls. Boys too are susceptible. Opposition to the vaccine has been cast as part of the "war on women".

Even if boys/men could not get cancer from HPV (they can and do), it would stop the transmission of the virus to non-vaccinated women.

“Eventually they will take that step”

Not all young adults will choose to take that step. There are people In a rush to “protect those that do” but who also do not support people of all ages who believe and practice that sex is only for marriage. Virgins are ridiculed, for making the right choice, not applauded for it. This makes it much harder for those choosing to live a chaste life.

Vaccines are a good thing. They can have side effects. As a poster mentioned Guillan-Barre is one ( usually associated with variants of swine flu vaccines) HPV vaccines should be a parent’s choice for their child after thought and discussion. Children, even teenagers are the responsibility of parents not the government.
