Many many epochs past, before claiming its rightful status as the beloved Oscar-winning trilogy known the world over, "The Lord Of The Rings" was planned to be a single movie, directed by John Madden ("Shakespeare In Love," "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel"). Obviously, that didn't come to pass, and Peter Jackson went in the opposite direction.
Given a nearly unlimited canvas to paint on, and buoyed by global success, the theatrical cuts of each movie were supplemented by extended footage on home video. And when Jackson returned to helm "The Hobbit" after Guillermo del Toro's exit, it wasn't long until the planned two-movie saga was expanded to yet another trilogy. In short, Jackson has an inexhaustible supply of J.R.R. Tolkien's material to put on the big screen, and today at Comic-Con he suggested even more could be coming from "The Lord Of Rings."

Okay with me. I’m the second of three generations in this family to love JRR. Can’t wait for the next Hobbit movie. When I went to see the The Fellowship of the Ring the first time and Hobbiton was shown, I cried. I wish my mother could have seen these movies before she died. She read them every year and then when her eye sight failed we got her an early audio book version. (she died in 1999) Some people don’t get fantasy. Mr. Mercat and two of my children are like that. Me and my oldest love it. Can’t get enough.
My only complaint was that the other Rangers weren’t included. Aragorn was not a lone ranger.
I liked “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.”
Hour after hour of Jackson Earth Makes more sense for DVD than it does in the theater.
Funny, I still haven't found the time to sit down and watch them yet. I have yet to see a LoTR movie.

Peter Jackson did about as good of a job as probably anyone else could have done. The LoTR series was long considered “unfilmable”.
I have yet to see a decent Lovecraft adaptation - another author considered “unfilmable” as well. Guillermo del Toro has a project stuck in development hell: “At The Mountains Of Madness” and according to him, his screenplay is quite faithful to Lovecraft’s titular novella. If there’s anyone who could pull off Lovecraft, it’s del Toro; he cites Lovecraft as one of his biggest inspirations, so I have little doubt he’d take great care to film it right.
Why is it in development hell? According to him, the studio honchos aren’t too thrilled because there’s no love story and no happy ending. Which is pretty typical for Lovecraft, but that makes the studios nervous, and thus far, del Toro is refusing to compromise his - and Lovecraft’s - bleak vision.

I know for several years now, Hollywood has been trying to make a live-action adaptation of “Akira”, and they’re still at it. Why is beyond me; “Akira” stands as not only one of the great animated films, but one of the great sci-fi movies as well. I suppose it helps to have some understanding of the deeper nuances of Japanese culture if you’re watching it, but even there, I personally see no reason to re-make it. That’s a waste of money, in my book.
Making they’re thinking dollar-signs like what happened after Hollywood remade a few of the J-Horror films like “Ring” and “Ju-On”.
Bump for the books. Watched first LOTR and part of second. Did not hold my interest like the books did!
The music is great.
It’s not in development hell it’s cancelled. For now anyway. The studio would not finance a film of that length, subject matter and cost unless it was rated PG-13 at max (and not cut off the primary audience for films like this) and somewhat happily resolved as you stated. That’s not possible with a faithful adaptation.
Okay, trying to picture Aragorn in a white hat with a mask. You are right, he is no Lone Ranger.
