FDA grapples with oversight of fecal transplants

Imagine a low-cost treatment for a life-threatening infection that could cure up to 90 percent of patients with minimal side effects, often in a few days.

It may sound like a miracle drug, but this cutting-edge treatment is profoundly simple—though somewhat icky: take the stool of healthy patients to cure those with hard-to-treat intestinal infections. A small but growing number of physicians have begun using these so-called fecal transplants to treat Clostridium difficile, commonly referred to as C-diff, a bacterial infection that causes nausea, cramping and diarrhea. The germ afflicts a half-million Americans annually and kills about 15,000 of them.

But fecal transplants pose a challenge for the Food and Drug Administration, which has decided to regulate the treatment as an experimental drug. […]

Most researchers agree that the FDA’s concerns are warranted. Patients can contract HIV, hepatitis and other viruses and parasites from fecal matter that is not properly screened. Additionally, there are no long-term studies on potential side effects of stool transplantation. …

Innovative, but I’ll bet it’s expensive.

Crunched-up papaya seeds, black walnut husk, probiotics, enemas, and exercise, folks.

Give it about a year and you’ll get the same results, and almost for free.

There are A LOT of natural, cheap stuff besides the above the kill of yeast, fungus and parasites quite readily.

Without aggressive treatment, you likely won't last a year with C. diff, walnut husks notwithstanding.

Must be a Pelosi thing - you have to pass it in order to know what’s in it.

They have been doing these for a while...it is very effective, and not that expensive.

It is kind of disgusting to consider, but the quality of life for people cured by it far, far outweighs that.

If I had C-Diff, I would do it in a heartbeat if the antibiotics can’t get rid of it, which sometimes, they can’t.

If you are an older person and you get it, your remedy won’t fix it. I can be pretty nasty, and deadly.

The ewww factor here is strong.

But if I were to contact c-diff...I would be on the phone to my relatives begging for a fecal transplant.

I’ve seen many die from it.

Whoops..! I almost forgot the most important one:

Bentonite Clay. Here is my cheap bulk source (with whom I have no biz relationship, other than being a customer):

http://www.herbco.com/p-1002-claybentonite.aspx

Mix a couple heaping tablespoons of it in a big 2-liter thing of clean water, shake it up, and then it sit for an hour or so to dissolve —looks like muddy water (grey tang?), doesn’t taste too crazy at all. Maybe 4 pounds will do you for one year, and that’s cheap as heck.

Drink 1/3 liter in the morning and at night -—your gunned up intestines will freaking LOVE YOU for this.

The clay has a strong negative charge and binds particles that have a strong positive charge —that most gunk.

Now if you take a bunch of minerals right after drinking bentonite clay you’d probably just bind up those minerals and be robbed of whatever benefit they’d otherwise have imparted, so if you take minerals, take them at some other time of the day.

If you are over 40 I will guarantee you have MUCH MORE gunk in you than you wager, and that’s even if you eat pretty well.

To really clean up the process is GRADUAL —this is not instant magic.

Exactly. If you are older and get it (usually because you are being treated for something else) this thing will not only make your life miserable if antibiotics cannot get rid of it, it will weaken you to point you will be open to a host of other nasty things.

I know something of this treatment, and while it is...er...kind of nasty to consider the cure, if you see people who get C-Diff, you grasp they would even consider forgoing the NG tube to put the stool in, and are desperate enough to eat a crap sandwich.

Plain.

I agree —C-Diff is a different kettle of fish than run of the mill gunk. C-Diff is really serious.

But I think for those w/o C-Diff and just suffering from generally poor health and stuff like R.A. and low energy, etc, my protocol is not a bad one to try out.

I gave the wrong impression, I think.

Agreed.

IIRC, I think this treatment actually evolved from a veterinary procedure...I think they have done it on cows for a long time.

I know where you are coming from. I think we could all take better care of our insides, and your advice doesn’t sound that bad to me.

I was positive the headline was a typo, but couldn’t think of what it would have been.

Nope. It’s a fecal transplant all right.

I heard of this — doctors say it sounds disgusting, but it is very effective.

But they have antibiotics which kill C difficile — I think they only use the fecal transplants in cases that are resistant to the antibiotics.

I remember all the sitcom jokes about being a sperm donor.

Now they're going to a field day with fesces donors to stool banks.
