Col Cooper was making a generalization. He was very specific in using the proper tool to accomplish the job. Though he preferred the rifle (and was an early developer and adopter of what is now known as the "Scout Rifle,") he was also one of the finest pistol combat instructors in the USA.

I know and in general I agree......though I also know the 1911 can be quite an offensive weapon at close ranges.
