You're right, a .50 BMG probably could "cut someone in half," but that's the .50 BMG round, typically firing a 750gr bullet at about 2800fps at the muzzle. In a pistol, you're dealing with a much shorter barrel, a much smaller projectile, a much smaller cartridge case, and far lower velocities.
Yes, much more powerful than a .44Mag, but still nowhere near what a rifle would generate, let along a .50 BMG rifle, like a Barrett.

It really depends on an awful lot of things.
A .22LR with a precise hit will "switch out the lights" while a .44Mag with sloppy shooting might do nothing more than make your adversary really angry.
There are so many variables that it's impossible to make accurate blanket statements.

Something I learned "the hard way" (similar to your experience) is that the only "safe" way to "de-cock" a 1911 is to drop the magazine, eject the chambered round, and depress the trigger with the muzzle pointed in a safe direction.

The SAA was chambered in many rounds, .45, .44 Special (rare), .44-40, .41 Colt, .38-40, .38 Special, .32-20, .25-20, and later .357 Mag.
I’ve tried a number of handguns, including the Baretta. I own an Egyptian knockoff of the Baretta, a CZ .32 that my Dad brought back in WWII and a cap and ball revolver, but I’ve never had a gun that felt so right in my hand as the Remington 1911 R1 that I recently bought.
Col Cooper was making a generalization. He was very specific in using the proper tool to accomplish the job. Though he preferred the rifle (and was an early developer and adopter of what is now known as the "Scout Rifle,") he was also one of the finest pistol combat instructors in the USA.

I know and in general I agree......though I also know the 1911 can be quite an offensive weapon at close ranges.
Condition 3 or Condition 1. There should be no Condition 2 with 1911’s IMO.

Agreed. My only problem with carrying my 1911 as a CCW weapon is the fact that it's an incredible combat weapon, the key word being combat. I would NEVER use my "race gun" 1911 in a self-defense situation, since it's designed for competition, with a 2 lb trigger pull.
Since I'm big enough, I would prefer to carry my S&W 645-5 revolver, in .45 Auto with full moon clips. Simply because in a self defense situation it is, for me, a safer weapon. While I believe I'm fully competent with my 1911, I believe there would be "less trouble" for me if I'm involved in a defensive shooting with a revolver than a semi-auto. Under high stress situations, there's less of a chance (however small) of an AD with my double action revolver than with a single action semi-auto.
This is strictly my own opinion, and applies only to myself.

I agree. A well-made 1911 (Kimber, Ed Brown, etc.) can be a very accurate weapon.
I bought a 10mm a few weeks ago. You know? The gun the FBI couldn’t handle? I put a Viridian X5L on it. Lordy, what a combination.
