Musk ox invasion keeps Nome wildlife managers busy
Anchorage Daily News ^ | comJuly 2, 2014 | SEAN DOOGAN

Nome is used to rowdy residents, but some relatively new transplants are making a real nuisance of themselves -- although unlike the colorful characters of the early 20th century gold rush days, these visitors have four legs, not two.

Musk oxen are wandering into the city on the Seward Peninsula, and despite loud noises, water hoses and even a blow-up bear coated in ursine urine, they don't want to leave.

You’re good!

Busdaddy lost another seven pounds this week, even with his vacation. He said they didn’t go out to eat, though he could have. He thought it might be too easy, even with the guidance of Nutrisystem.

I was proud of him. He has even encouraged his son to research and try to lose some weight. He has medical problems and is on some heavy pain killers, so I’m sure that messes up a lot of things in his system.

When they lose signal gain, that’s when they race around looking for a good spot for reception.

I’m very pleased for him! Once he’s lost a substantial amount and starts looking at keeping it up, you can suggest Weight Watchers to him. All normal, grocery store food, and you just choose the items that add up to your Points.

If he’s not a person who needs to go to meetings for psychological support, he might find that the website with its counting and check-off aspects appeals to a numerical drive.

Nutrisystem has a site where he records his daily intake, and his weight loss and measurements. Since he is NOT a cook, (buying bananas is his forte) I suspect he will stay on Nutrisystem until he gets tired of the food.

The thing is, now he is choosing what he wants sent to him, so even that makes eating a little more pleasurable. And he gets desserts every day, too, and that helps his sweet tooth.

I try to encourage him, of course, and praise him when he loses, and I hope it helps. I walk with him but he goes for an hour and the longest I can last is 30 minutes without a rest.

You’re helping! For Weight Watchers, you have to cook a little bit, unless you buy frozen foods at the Walmart. Maybe he’d try heating a little frozen fish in a pan, or grilling chicken, to save money?

The way he sees it, he has no bills but the rent and utilities, and after the second month, he has learned that he actually spends less on food than he did before Nutrisystem. So he doesn’t mind spending the money for the food. I think he enjoys choosing his meals...it’s almost as good as being able to order in a restaurant... ;o]

If he wants to buy something for the race car, he just saves up a little from each pay check and pays cash for it...no credit cards for him!

I’m thinking the maintenance supervisor isn’t going to make it back by 1700 tonight.

So I will go shower and head for bed. I need it.

Tomorrow I will be busy with the coat closet and sorting stuff from the small bookcase to be sent to the thrift store. Yes, a third load! Someone please stop me!!!

Umm... FYI...

Note that the photo in the article is of a ... moose. Now maybe 'elk' is Swedish for 'moose', but I think not.

There is an answer to this conundrum, found buried inside that Swedish Website:
Please note: This article has used the terms elk and moose interchangeably. We are aware that this confuses and even angers some people, but we are fairly relaxed about that.

Elk/Moose terminology update: what is commonly called a moose in North America is called an elk in Europe. The fact that there is a different animal, native to North America, which the locals have decided refer to as an elk is not our fault. The animal featured in the article is the European Elk, Alces alces, or moose to North Americans. That we choose to occasionally refer to it as a moose is partly as a courtesy to our North American friends, to let them know which animal we’re talking about, but mostly because ‘moose’ is a funnier sounding word. But if you think we’re going to give up calling our elk ‘elk’ just because you lot went over there and started calling something that wasn’t an elk an elk, well, think again. Elk elk elk.
