Musk ox invasion keeps Nome wildlife managers busy

Nome is used to rowdy residents, but some relatively new transplants are making a real nuisance of themselves -- although unlike the colorful characters of the early 20th century gold rush days, these visitors have four legs, not two.

Musk oxen are wandering into the city on the Seward Peninsula, and despite loud noises, water hoses and even a blow-up bear coated in ursine urine, they don't want to leave.

My old Lucas Prince of Darkness loves to sleep on my left hand while I’m at the computer. Most of
him is on the little paper-towel cushions I made for him, but his front legs and head rest on my hand.

I “borrowed” a copy of that picture because it is so like something he would say. Hope you don’t mind.

He doesn’t have long, poor old guy. The vet can’t find anything wrong with him but old age. :(

Yes. She was born 3rd, and I thought she was still born at first. We got her breathing, but she couldn't nurse.

This is all 6 of them on Thursday before the vet came. The runt is front, closest to the hand towel.

I studied to be a veterinarian assistant, but had to quit because of illness. I wish I could have completed it. I still have the text books for the classes.

Puppies will be born a set number of days after the first egg is inseminated (I forgot the exact number) so if some eggs are inseminated later, they will only develop to the end of the pregnancy. Same with cats. Some runts are just small, some have some minor physical problems and some are profoundly stunted to the point of not being “viable.”

Yep, I would have, because I love animals. I had a 4.0 GPA. My dream was to go to San Diego for more schooling and become a vet tech so I could be in the operation room. No telling where I could have gone...
