15 Terrifying Bridges People Actually Use
Destination Seeker ^ | 5-15-14

To paraphrase “Dilbert” creator Scott Adams, “the goal of every good engineer is to do very little in their careers, and if you must build something, just hope it doesn’t hurt anyone.”

Of course, that’s selling short some very talented engineers who should be given great credit for figuring out innovative ways of getting us to cross previously un-crossable terrain like large bodies of water or deep, deep canyons.

If they and their team did their job right, they’ve created something that stands the test of time. But there are other structures that most of us agree could have used some better engineering, or at the very least a few more handholds.

Here’s a video of the Royal Gorge bridge. They apparently still drive over this thing. When I was a kid, there was a line of cars that went over it - insane.

I remember driving across after the lady in the Yugo went over the side. I had a load of veneer logs going to Sing Sing.

Did you know that the Memorial Bridge is a draw bridge?

What makes Key Bridge and Jimmy Carter alike?

They both go in and out of Rosslyn.

When I was there way back when there was an Ex Vietnam Helicopter Pilot that flew a Tour in a Hughes 500 I believe. He flew it under the Bridge.

I’ll have to check and see if he’s still there. I couldn’t talk my Brother into doing the Tour with me but there was a two person minimum so it was a no go.

My Brother was an A & P Mechanic. If it doesn’t have Wings, he won’t get near it.

Mackinac Bridge never scared me. I crossed it several times. I actually walked it a couple of times at the annual Labor Day Bridge walk. It does sway and can be dangerous if the winds are high. One driver likely committed suicide driving off the bridge. The wind infamously took a Yugo off a bridge once.

I was a lot more uneasy with some of the mountain driving in the Smokeys than I was on that bridge, and even more uneasy when I'm back in the Roscommon area driving at night when the deer are all out running around, hopefully not in front of my car.

Saginaw Bay Bridge, Michigan

Zilwaukee Bridge over the river? That was a pork barrel disaster. It was built because there used to be a drawbridge there that opened up for freighters. Too bad when it opened, the freighters no longer went that far inland.

Foot bridge located on the Cornell University campus:

The lawyers are after Cornell for bridge suicides. Some kid managed to jump over the railing below, and now his lawyer dad wants $168m.

If a suspension bridge for traffic on foot counts, this one can be scary when the wind’s up, as it frequently is up there. Gorgeous view, though.

Just be thankful the TZ isn't on your daily commute...

"one of the most decrepit and potentially dangerous bridges" in the U.S. ("Falling Down" New York Magazine, January 27, 2013. )

The signs on Golden Gate says that jumping form this bridge may be fatal, ya think? They also have a hotline to crisis counselors.

“Route 301 bridge over the Potomac. You actually pay money to scare yourself to death.”

Only have to pay going south (at least the last time I crossed it). Kind of like charging you a fee to escape Maryland.

Yeah, Zilwaukee Bridge. I remember the drawbridge (infrequent trips). Even though the new Zilwaukee Bridge opened ... for a long time, I would go the greater distance to get around it.
