As we’ve seen from many of our leaders in religious organizations, morality is a forgotten quality.

I don’t doubt one bit that someone who is as in love with himself as he is would be an atheist. Every atheist I know truly believes they are smarter than everyone else.

I have yet to see an articulated basis for any morality of any kind absent a deity. If we are just random molecules, why on earth would anyone care about murder, theft, rape, or even being kind to another human. None of it would matter in the slightest, it’s just a social construct based on evolutionary preferences that maximized the growth of the species. But it’s not binding or even preferable in a modern age. So, why do they continue to feel bound by laws and morality?

I’m curious how you get that out of what he said. He didn’t say he respected anything and everything ever done in the name of religion.

I respect the beliefs of Catholics, though I disagree with them.

But I have no respect for the Inquisition nor the Ustasha of Croatia, which murdered many thousands of people in the name of Catholicism.

Similar issues apply for most religions, merely using Catholicism as an example.

I’ll tell you who is an attractive man; Gorge Will. He has clean looks, scrubbed and shampooed...

Good observations.

By the way, the claim that “EVERYTHING is relative,” is much too absolute for me. :)

Romans 1:20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.

This is indeed true. I am now too old to talk to people like they are children. This plainly says there is NO SUCH THING AS AN HONEST ATHEIST - PERIOD. Anyone who has the capacity to see the things Paul lists KNOWS THERE IS A GOD. Anyone who says otherwise, George Will et al , are liars and they know they are liars.

I'm surprised that George Will has never read Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis.

Mere Christianity is C.S. Lewis's forceful and accessible doctrine of Christian belief. First heard as informal radio broadcasts and then published as three separate books - The Case for Christianity, Christian Behavior, and Beyond Personality - Mere Christianity brings together what Lewis saw as the fundamental truths of the religion. Rejecting the boundaries that divide Christianity's many denominations, C.S. Lewis finds a common ground on which all those who have Christian faith can stand together, proving that "at the centre of each there is something, or a Someone, who against all divergences of belief, all differences of temperament, all memories of mutual persecution, speaks the same voice."

I don’t see how DNA requires theism. A “creator”, prime mover, or DNA author doesn’t need to be theistic one.

I have not problem with live and let live atheists

I don't either as a rule, but in this case, it is astonishing that Mr. Will has not been persuaded by Sir Isaac Newton, Albert Einstein, and others - who in the world of physics have more or less proven there is a Creator God. Seems to me this lack of being persuaded is willfull ignorance on his part. Then again, he and Krauthammer have been "captain obvious" for years now…..

By default, such is. If not, then computer programs would write themselves (putatively) in the same way DNA “wrote” itself.

What I meant to say is that I would be surprised if George Will had read Mere Christianity and would still believe himself to be an atheist.

To each his own. Not surprised. Will never struck me as a deep thinker. My father was one. Smart on some things and shallow on others.

How very sad. He does not believe in the miracle of life. What a miserable existence.

Sorry, I should have clarified. Will's comment “I am just not persuaded. That’s all." is what I went through.

I went through the motions, and tried to pretend I believed, but in the end I decided to quit lying to myself and accept the fact that I just didn't believe, and couldn't fool myself into doing so. With age came a growing lack lack of concern for what other people thought, so I quit worrying about it.

I appreciate his candor on this subject.

And I have to give credit where credit is due. I've disagreed with a lot of George Will's positions over the years, but I've never sensed a shred of hostility on his part towards any religious inclinations of his fellow Americans.

The stuff I have seen?

Nope. Cannot be coincidence. God's there, and He's having a lot of fun.
